Birmingham City University is a comprehensive and student-centred place of higher learning. It is home to around 25,800 students from 80 different countries. Students enjoy studying in the professional and friendly atmosphere of Birmingham.

With students, staff and alumni from over 100 countries, the University is a dynamic learning environment, offering courses approved by professional bodies. The University curricula helps students gain adequate hands-on learning and develop skills required to thrive at different workplaces.

A range of subjects can be chosen from the four faculties at Birmingham – Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences; Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment; Faculty of Business, Law and Social Sciences; Faculty of Arts, Design and Media.

Students can pick from a varied number of services at the University, including accommodation and immigration support, financial assistance, career and job advice, and health and wellbeing support. The Centre for Academic Success helps students improve their academic writing skills through workshops and tutorials.

Birmingham students are highly employable, with 94% of undergraduate students finding employment or starting further studies 6 months from graduating.

An investment of £260 million has already been made towards major facilities and the city centre campus at Eastside. One of the latest developments includes a £57 million Birmingham Conservatoire, which is world famous. The conservatoire received its ‘royal’ status last year, meaning that it is now known as the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

The Students’ Union is an independent organisation, run by students. Besides helping with academic and money matters, the union ensures they become part of the vibrant sports and recreation life on campus.

Birmingham is the UK’s second-largest city, with a long history of welcoming international students. There are scores of things to do and see in the city, including over 50 festivals held every year. It is also a cherished spot for sport lovers, and a great place for entertainment.

Birmingham City University comprises three main campuses, with additional sites located throughout the city – including one of the largest jewellery schools in the world.

The University is continuously improving – reflecting Birmingham’s urban transformation – with a £260 million investment in new facilities.

What's covered in this course?

The well-being of babies and young children is at the heart of this degree, which will prepare you to become a confident and competent advocate for children from birth to 5 years. Studying at our recently extended state-of-the-art £71 million City South Campus, you will have access to excellent facilities to enhance your understanding and knowledge.

You will gain a complete understanding of young children’s needs, how they learn, develop and grow and how their early experiences are so fundamentally important. You will also explore wider concepts to support your understanding such as social justice, social mobility and social responsibility.

As you progress through the course, you will develop your personal and professional skills so that after university you should be influential in developing practice, provision and policy, as well as resilient and self-assured as you progress in your career.  

This course should present many rewarding opportunities for you to explore once you have graduated in many different UK institutions, such as schools, nurseries and charities. Our staff are dedicated to preparing you for the world of work and will help you to decide which role you want to pursue after graduating.

There will be opportunities for you to work, and learn, alongside a variety of professionals delivering services that support the wellbeing, development and learning needs of babies and young children, with this in mind you will have placement opportunities throughout the program.

Are you interested in teaching, education systems, care or research? Our BA (Hons) in Education Studies will allow you to explore all aspects of education, focusing on subject areas of most interest to you, so that you graduate with a range of career options in what you love to do.

What's covered in this course?

Studying in our recently extended state-of-the-art £71 million City South Campus in Edgbaston, you will explore concepts such as education and society, equality, diversity, values and policies of the UK education system, as well as educational systems around the world. You will also have lots of opportunities to delve deeper into subjects that matter and are of interest to you too.

Our degree uses a wide variety of learning methods, including interactive and engaging lectures, seminars and workshops with guest speakers often stopping by to share their knowledge. This is combined with our experienced course staff who will be supporting and guiding you every step of the way.

Throughout the course we arrange visits to and welcome guest speakers from organisations from across Birmingham including, the Thinktank, Historic England, CBSO and the Newman Brother’s (a museum in the Jewellery Quarter). You will also have the opportunity to go on a work placement during year two to enhance your skills and experience.

The placement module is a crucial aspect and allows you to merge theory with practice.  You will be encouraged to experience and consider different educational settings though enhancement activities such as volunteering, Careers Week, Graduate+ and presentations from external speakers.

This course is designed to promote independence so that you become more a confident, autonomous, creative lifelong learner and will challenge you to push the boundaries and discover your full potential while at university.

As one of the largest providers of social workers in the UK, our Social Work BSc (Hons) degree is regulated by Social Work England and is well known for producing excellent practitioners capable of operating in local authority, voluntary or private settings.

Our BA (Hons) Working with Children, Young People and Families course has at its heart a strong commitment to social justice and equality. We will provide you with a range of teaching and learning experiences to build on your existing skills and motivation so that you can contribute to a changing society, particularly with services who work with, or for, vulnerable children, young people and their families.

With a focus on personal, as well as professional development, our degree will engage you in understand the complexities of working with children young people and their families, in theory and in practice.  We want to support you so that you can develop to become effective agents of change, making a difference to vulnerable children and young people, and providing family support.

The rights of children and young people, and a commitment to social justice are at the centre of what we believe, teach and research.

As you progress through the program you will become confident and competent advocates of children and young people; developing your personal and professional skills so that you can, in future careers, be influential in developing practice, provision and policy.

Through a supportive and nurturing learning environment, you will be encouraged to develop your communication skills, drawing on digital technologies and to take ‘risks’ as you explore and find out new things about working with children, young people and families, as well as yourself.

Our unique Biomedical Engineering degree program will provide you with the skills and expertise needed to work in specialist areas such as assistive technology, rehabilitation, medical imaging and robotics, physiology monitoring, cardiopulmonary engineering, m-health and e-health, orthopedic implants and regenerative medicine/ tissue engineering.

Biomedical Engineering (also known as bioengineering) is a discipline of engineering that interacts with the human body. You will be developing and applying innovative skills in the design, manufacturing and maintenance of medical equipment and devices covering all spectrums from the newborn to assistive living for the elderly. Industrial-led practical workshops and labs will help enhance your technical skills. This will enable you to relate ‘real-life’ commercial innovations to the underpinning academic theory learnt in the lectures.

Our state-of-the-art facilities will allow you to explore a variety of biomedical applications including: sensing and measuring on micro and nano scales, personal health tracking, remote diagnosis and monitoring, biomaterials to name a few. The knowledge acquired will then enable you to engage in exciting projects such as designing prostheses or devising new medical technology for physicians and medical professionals to be used in the prognosis, diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Along with these technical skills, as an engineer you will also gain a diverse range of transferrable skills, including effective communication, leadership, the ability to critically assess gaps in target healthcare markets, and the tools required to provide solutions to bridge those gaps.
