This degree is an ideal choice for students who want to study music as well as another major or minor. Prior to admission to the program, all students must audition on their major instrument or voice. Once admitted, music students complete a variety of music and performance classes. The music curriculum includes classes on music theory, conducting, music history, large ensemble, performance, chamber ensemble performance, keyboard, and private lessons. Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

Geography is a unique field that bridges the physical and social sciences: geographers study not just natural Earth systems but also human societies, examining the interaction between the two. Geographers work with powerful technologies such as geographic information systems (GIS), digital Earth imagery (remote sensing), and spatial modeling. Geography also has a long-standing field tradition, often involving travel to spectacular locations. The University of Utah’s Geography program will provide you with a collaborative, integrated approach to understanding complex geographical challenges, such as climate change, globalization, sustainability, urbanization, and living with hazards. The program curriculum includes courses in environments, human geography, geographical analysis, cartography, and GIS; students then choose courses from the broader areas of physical and human geography, as well as electives from allied fields (such as atmospheric sciences or geology). Speech and Hearing Science professionals evaluate, diagnose, and treat individuals with speech and hearing disorders, such as disorders of communication, the voice, swallowing, and cognition. The undergraduate major in Speech & Hearing Science (SPHS) is a pre-professional degree for speech language pathology and/or audiology. Students in the program complete courses in phonetics, anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, language science, pediatric and medical speech-language pathology, hearing disorders and evaluation, and psychometrics (measuring mental abilities and processes). Electives in allied fields -biology, physics, and psychology, for example- are also required, along with 25 hours of field experience observing treatment practices for speech, language, and hearing. Students who complete this program earn a BS in Speech and Hearing Science and are then prepared to enter graduate programs in the field: a master's degree is required for professional practice in speech-language pathology, and a doctor of audiology (AuD) is required for professional practice in audiology.

Social workers provide mental health services to individuals and communities across the United States. They work in family and child service agencies, hospitals, schools, criminal justice agencies, nursing homes, and other places, providing intervention, evaluation, and counseling services. If you want to enter this challenging but rewarding field, the U’s Social Work (B.S.W.) program will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need to professionally practice social work in a number of settings: a B.S.W. degree prepares students for immediate entry into human service positions across the country. Students in the program complete coursework in the following areas: human behavior and social environment, social work as a profession, social diversity and cultural understanding, research and evaluation, and welfare policy. In preparation for professional practice, students also complete a supervised internship in the field.

Bachelor of Arts in Finance

Finance deals with the concepts of time, money, risk, how they are interrelated, and how money is budgeted and spent. Finance students learn how to assign value to projects, companies and securities. They also study how individuals and businesses can efficiently allocate financial resources, invest, and raise capital. With these skills, Finance majors can determine wise investment strategies, value stock options, and help companies and individuals manage their money. A critical component of a finance students’ education is meaningful, real-world opportunities, balanced by worthwhile classroom experiences. The U’s Finance curriculum covers topics such as business statistics, business calculus, corporate finance, insurance, investments, and real estate. A global perspectives course allows students to apply an international context to the business skills and perspectives they are learning.

In addition to the traditional major, students may pursue an emphasis in Advanced Financial Analysis, an honors-level program that provides students with a deeper foundation in finance and accounting, supplemented by additional technical competence in financial modeling and coding as applied to finance problems. Courses will focus on developing technical skills and applying those skills to solve problems in realistic settings.

Quantitative Analysis of Markets & Organizations (QAMO) majors builds analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills by utilizing game theory and econometrics to answer real-world questions. Students learn strategic direction and in-depth analysis.
