New F-1 visa rules 2023

The US State Department announced some changes in F-1 visa rules starting this year. On February 21, 2023, it announced an extension of the window of opportunity for foreign students to apply for F-1 and M-1 visa to study in the US.

Extension of window
Earlier, students could only apply until 120 days prior to the start of their intended programme. Now the US State Department will accept student visa applications up to 365 days in advance as per the updated criteria.

Why the extension
This move is intended to reduce delays in visa processing, get rid of backlogs and free up more planning time for US educational institutions and students.

Change already in effect
The new application window became operational immediately on the day of its announcement, i.e. February 21, 2023.

Other rules unchanged
Applicants must bear in mind that the other old regulations are still in effect: students with approved visas may enter in the US for a maximum of 30 days prior to program start date.
