About Lakeland College Vermilion Campus

Lakeland College is an Alberta Rural Development Network member and Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICAN) member. It is an internationally recognized post-secondary institution in Alberta, Canada. The college began as Vermilion Farm in 1911 and was finally renamed Lakeland College after many years. It is a government-funded institution with campuses in Vermilion and Lloydminster.

Lakeland College is Canada's first inter-provincial college, serving inhabitants from both Alberta and Saskatchewan. It is also a member of College and Institutes Canada (CICAN), and the Alberta Rural Development Network. Students come to Lakeland College from more than 20 countries in recent years. Lakeland is also active in projects and relationships with other post-secondary educational establishments in Canada and worldwide as part of its mandate.

Lakeland is a hotbed of creativity, student support, and academic distinction. The college is focused on best serving its students by providing high-quality, industry-relevant, affordable, and accessible post-secondary educational opportunities.

Lakeland College Vermilion Campus Services & Facilities

Students can learn outside the classroom at the college farm, the Emergency Training Centre's training grounds, and the environmental science program's outdoor laboratory.

Lakeland College has two libraries on campus, one in Vermillion and the other in Lloydminster. Every library also has a book collection, a Circulation/Service desk where patrons can sign out books and ask research questions, individual and group study places, and a computer lab.

The Colonel Cormack Recreation Centre on the Vermilion campus is busy seven days a week, featuring amenities such as a gym, a health club, a poolside with a hot tub, and squash and racquetball courts.

Lloydminster students have access to a weight room and a gymnasium. Next to Lakeland College's Lloydminster campus lies the Bud Miller All Seasons Park. Lakeland's student-athletes are known as Rustlers.

Lakeland's housing is convenient, full of options, safe, and offers more than simply a bed and a workspace. Living on campus is an excellent opportunity to learn, grow, and get the most out of college experience in Canada. Both campuses have unique residential sections.

The dorms in Lloydminster are just a short walk from the main campus. And Bud Miller Park is only a short distance away. Lloydminster Residence Village has two types of units: Spinwheel for single students and Townhouses for families.

Vermilion's housing village is within walking distance of classes, the cafe, the bookstore, Spurs, and everything else. Classes, the cafeteria, the bookstore, Spurs, and everything else are all within walking distance of Vermilion's housing village.

Vermillion houses have double rooms, and family houses with bungalows are located near Lakeland's leisure facility. There is a communal TV, kitchen, and free laundry in each building.

Ecosystems and biodiversity are at the heart of conservation and restoration ecology (CARE).
The acronym fits. As a CARE graduate you’ll be making a difference for plants, soils, water and wildlife. Not just for now, but for future generations.

How you’ll do it is by learning practical field skills. Enough skills you'll be able to work in the field between 1st and 2nd year.
In second year, you’ll focus on best management practices and stewardship techniques. You’ll learn how to renew, restore and or conserve anything from grasslands to forest.

Field labs, outdoor classrooms, if where you practice [applied skills].  Some examples include:

  • Identify critical habitat requirements for plants and animals
  • Use environmental standards to classify wetland, forest and grassland
  • Assess, inventory and map disturbed and undisturbed ecosystems
  • Apply restoration techniques to real rural and urban landscapes
  • Collect field data and report per industry standards

As a graduate you’re work-force ready. You also qualify for an Alberta Institute of Agrologists or the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists designations.

Through our program you’ll gain skills and experience to ensure industry and the environment can coexist. This means either reclaiming disturbed lands or minimizing industry’s effects on natural habitats

You’ll learn how to

  • Classify, manage and conserve soils
  • Recognize and understand a variety of ecosystems
  • Do detailed site assessments
  • Apply reclamation regulations, guidelines and techniques to disturbed lands

You’ll visit and study forested, mined and cultivated lands as well as native and reclaimed areas.

On field trips , you’ll see current industry practices and technologies. In hands-on field labs you’ll develop and practice more than 20 applied skills industry wants.

Environmental Studies & Earth Sciences

Bachelor Of Applied Science In Environmental Management

  • Take the next step in your environmental career with Lakeland's applied degree.
  • Choose to major in either reclamation and remediation or monitoring and environmental protection. Get equipped to be a project manager, inspector, or specialist.
  • Whether you come from a diploma or degree program, this applied degree will build on and add to your practical skills
  • In the first year you’ll build advanced technical and field skills. You’ll also connect with industry on field trips.
  • In the second year you’ll put your knowledge to work in an 8-month placement.
  • You complete the program with a capstone presentation about your practicum.

Focus on the creatures that live in our forests, lakes, prairies, rivers and wetlands as you prepare to be an accredited wildlife and fisheries technician.

You’ll learn to identify-- by sight, sound or sign-- the smallest creatures in a pond to the largest animals on land. That means you’ll learn how to:

  • Use spotting scopes and trail cameras
  • Identify songbirds to owls, and frogs to toads by their calls
  • Identify wildlife by tracks, scat, burrows, nests and chews

You’ll spend lots of time in the field learning and practicing applied skills such as electrofishing, GPS operation and live trapping. You’ll earn outdoor certificates including wilderness first aid, bear awareness, and quad/snowmobile/watercraft operation.

In class, you’ll learn about:

  • Both animal and plant biology and ecology
  • Conserving species-at-risk
  • Protected areas, and conserving and enhancing habitat
  • Game and harvest management

Lakeland College Vermilion Campus Admission Requirements

There are some standard requirements for students to apply to Lakeland College.

  • The student must be at least 18 years old before beginning the course.
  • Students from non-English speaking countries need to prove their language proficiency by taking PTE, IELTS, TOEFL or other equivalent exams.
  • Students must provide original academic transcripts from all academic institutions before requesting applications. If the original transcripts are not in English, students must submit the translated copies with each original document.

Lakeland is a fantastic school with professors and staff that really care about their student's well-being. The community is small and close-knit. Classes are small, allowing for as much one-on-one interaction with professors as possible, allowing each student to learn in their desired manner. The college also offers a variety of sports activities to its students that include basketball, cross country running, rowing, soccer and volleyball. There are several clubs at the college for students. Lakeland also helps its students find an internship, theoretical learning is enhanced by hands-on practical experiences and study abroad opportunities. College offers a library where students can study privately or in groups. Accommodation is convenient, full of opportunities and safe. Students at Lake Land College have a variety of opportunities to earn scholarships to help pay for college.
