About Eastern Institute of Technology Hawke Bay Campus

The Eastern Institute of Technology is regarded by the Tertiary Education Commission and Ministry of Education as one of the exemplary tertiary education providers in New Zealand. It is forty years since the Hawke’s Bay and Tairawhiti campuses were established as tertiary education institutes in Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne respectively. As a result of the merger between the former Tairawhiti Polytechnic and EIT Hawke’s Bay in 2010, EIT is the major provider of higher education on the east coast of the North Island.  One of the key strengths of the 130 programme offerings is that they range from foundation to degree and post-graduate level. There are satellite campuses throughout the region to enable easier student access as well as many courses delivered online.  An illustrated history of the EIT Tairawhiti campuses was published in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of EIT in 2015. The objectives are to highlight and analyse the contributions EIT (Hawke’s Bay and Tarawhiti) has made to higher education and workforce development on the east coast.

EIT - Te Pukenga offers you over 150 qualifications from certificates and diplomas, to degree and postgraduate levels at campuses in Hawke’s Bay, Tairawhiti (Gisborne) and Auckland. Or learn at one of our Regional Learning Centres situated in Hastings, Maraenui, Ruatorea, Tokomaru Bay, Waipukurau and Wairoa.

Accommodation options include homestay with a New Zealand family or flatting at the Student Village right across the road from EIT’s Hawke’s Bay Campus. There are also private accommodation options available.

EIT Student Village
The EIT Student Village is a self-catering complex of 12 villas housing 6 students in each. Residents include both domestic and international students. Each student has their own furnished bedroom. Students share lounge, kitchen, dining, laundry and bathroom facilities in each villa.

It is a great environment to meet other students, study and relax together. The EIT Student Village is located opposite the EIT Hawke’s Bay campus and is next to the Pettigrew Green Arena and bus stops for both Napier and Hastings.

There are regular office hours and 24-hour support arrangements for resident students.

Students will be required to pay a one-off $400 bond plus 10 weeks rent $2000 in advance and sign a residency agreement with the EIT Student Village for a minimum of one semester (20 weeks) which includes:

  • Single furnished bedroom
  • Furnished kitchen, dining and lounge
  • Bathroom and laundry facilities
  • Reasonable use of electricity
  • Unlimited fibre internet
  • Storage shed in each villa
  • Onsite car parking

International students who do not wish to bring their own bedding may purchase a bedding pack for $200. This includes a mattress protector, pillow, sheet set, duvet, and towel. Please indicate whether you require a bedding pack on your EIT Student Village application form.

Students may contract for the academic year (40 weeks) or one semester (20 weeks). Where the programme is shorter than one semester you can contract for the length of your enrolled programme based on room availability.

Rooms fill fast so places can only be secured for students who have paid the fees and returned their EIT Student Village application.

Homestay
If you are an English language student, we strongly recommend you apply for homestay accommodation. Homestay provides a warm family environment with your own room and meals provided. It gives you the opportunity to assimilate into Napier and the New Zealand way of life by becoming part of a New Zealand family. All of our homestay families are carefully selected and supervised. They have been vetted by police and inspected by EIT staff. The cost of homestay is from NZ$270 per week (minimum 4 weeks stay), and includes:

  • Your own furnished bedroom with study area
  • Clean bed linens and towels
  • Three meals per day (please note that students may be expected to prepare their own breakfast and lunch)
  • Internet connection (A fair and reasonable amount is provided. You will need to clarify this with your individual homestay family)
  • Located within a close proximity to EIT, where students may walk, bicycle or take the bus
  • Pickup from Napier airport

Please note that the homestay fee does not cover personal items such as phone calls, toiletries, excessive internet use or entrance fees to any activities with your host family. Students who prefer to take the bus to EIT (rather than walk or bicycle) will be responsible for their own bus fare. A homestay request form is required to understand what type of family would best suit you. It is important to be honest about your personality and lifestyle so we can best match you to a family. EIT endeavours to match students with a family based on the information on the homestay request form. However, some requests may not be met due to homestay family availability at the time. Once you have secured a minimum of one month homestay in advance we will forward your homestay details to you. Please note:

  • Students should commit to the first month in homestay. EIT does not change homestay placements in the first month as it takes some time for students to settle into their new lifestyle, and for the family and student to adjust to each other.
  • Students should give one week’s notice to EIT to vacate a homestay placement.
  • All payments for continuing homestay should be made directly to the homestay provider.
  • Students who go on holiday during their homestay period should pay the full rate for one week plus $50 to reserve their room for when they return.
