Studying at Massey University is about doing things differently. It’s about shaping the world, by coming up with innovative, practical solutions and ideas for how we can live our lives in a better way.
Massey is New Zealand’s national university, with around 34,000 students as well as a presence in twenty nations around the globe. About half our students study through Massey’s virtual (distance) campus. Each year, more than 5000 international students from more than 100 countries find a warm and welcoming environment at our three North Island campuses in Auckland, Palmerston North and Wellington.
Massey University has a proud 125-year history and has been offering distance learning for more than half a century. We are sought-after throughout the world for our innovation and excellence. Massey has a strong global outreach with a campus in Singapore and connections with alumni and students located throughout the world.
As a Massey student, you can apply to live in a Massey hall of residence, apartment or studio unit, or with a family in homestay accommodation, or find your own flat.
Halls of residence, apartments, and studio units
Living in Massey's halls, apartments and studio units will enhance your university experience. You'll be part of a friendly student community and supported to focus on your studies.
Homestay
We offer homestay accommodation in Auckland or Palmerston North (for the Manawatu campus) for international and New Zealand students. Homestays are suitable for a few weeks to a full qualification year. Living with local hosts in their homes is a great way to familiarise yourself with your new country or city and adjust to university life in a supportive, safe environment, making it a home away from home.
For domestic students, a supportive homestay can help make the many changes that come from moving to university feel less daunting, and for international students, it provides a total immersion experience that is a unique introduction to New Zealand life, culture and the English language. You can listen and speak English in a safe and trusted environment that will help you to develop your English language skills.
As a homestay student at Massey, you will be matched and placed with a homestay family by our expert homestay team who will work to find the best fit for you and the family you will live with. Homestay accommodation is very cost effective.
Flatting and private accommodation
Some students choose to rent private accommodation while they study at Massey's Auckland, Wellington or Manawat? (Palmerston North) campuses. Renting private accommodation could mean moving into a shared house (called a flat in New Zealand), finding an apartment on your own, or establishing a flat with a group of friends (flatmates).
Massey University Library offers a wide range of resources, both in print and online, that cover all subjects taught on campus in order to assist you with your studies. Additionally, Manawatū has various clubs and societies catering to diverse interests such as weightlifting, sustainability, surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding. The Dining Hall is available for Massey University hall residents to have their meals in.
The Massey Sport and Recreation Centre is equipped with a range of facilities that cater to various physical activities. These include a comprehensive fitness center, a multi-purpose sports hall, squash courts, a climbing wall, and fields for playing rugby and soccer.
Beauden Barrett (Rugby union player), Anthony McCarten (director and novelist) Lisa Carrington (canoeist), Gemma McCaw (Field hockey player) are among the notable alumni of the college.
