About The University of Waikato Hamilton Campus

The University of Waikato opened in 1964 after many years of energetic lobbying by a group of Hamilton locals, determined to have a university in their city. To begin with, facilities were sparse, but in early 1965 new buildings were officially opened by then Governor-General Sir Bernard Fergusson. Sir Don Llewellyn was founding Vice-Chancellor.

The University of Waikato is committed to delivering a world-class education and research portfolio. With around 13,000 students and 1,500 staff, we offer a distinctive and rewarding university experience, while pursuing strong international links to advance knowledge. The University of Waikato has three unique campuses:

  • Hamilton campus
  • Tauranga campus
  • Zhejiang University City College (ZUCC)

Hamilton Campus
Our main campus is located in the vibrant, multicultural city of Hamilton, with outdoor activities, shopping malls and eateries only a short drive away.
The river city has plenty to offer while you study here, to make your university experience one of a kind. On campus you'll find everything you need and more, including our state of the art Student Centre, sporting facilities, cafes, shops and ample parking. Hamilton Accommodation
Our Hamilton campus has a range of different accommodation options available for all students and lifestyles. From our halls of residence that offer full support to aid your transition into university life to Silverdale apartments and Orchard park that offer an independent lifestyle and the convenience of living on campus, find a room that will suit your needs.

Homestay
Homestay is a great option for international students who want to improve their conversational English and would like to live with a family who can help settle them into life in New Zealand.

Your homestay family will provide you with a room, a bed, desk/table and space to store your personal belongings. You are expected to keep your room clean and tidy and help with household duties as if you were one of the family. They will also provide you with three meals a day, seven days a week.

Flatting and Private Rentals
For students who don’t want to live on campus, there are plenty of flats and rental properties for you to choose from. We recommend that if you choose to rent or flat that you move in early to get settled in before the trimester starts and always have your agreement in writing.

On campus, there is a plethora of amenities available, such as the advanced Student Centre, athletic facilities, dining options, retail stores, and convenient parking. The gym located on the University of Waikato campus, called UniRec, is regarded as one of the most well-equipped fitness centers. It has various facilities such as weights and cardio machines, personal trainers, classes for exercise, physiotherapy services, a sports hall, and swimming pools. If students don't want to make a long-term commitment, UniRec offers memberships with flexibility, and students of the University of Waikato are eligible for discounted rates.

Health Sciences, Nursing and Emergency Services

Bachelor of Health, Sport & Human Performance in Community Health

The Community Health major is designed to ensure graduates have the knowledge, skills and understanding to make a difference in the wellbeing of the people in our local, regional and national communities. Drawing on M?ori, Indigenous, critical and sociological perspectives, students will be provided with the opportunity to investigate the way health is understood and practiced in our society. Students will develop practical skills that will allow them to advocate and take action in enhancing the well-being of themselves and others.

Community Health is an interdisciplinary programme, which includes papers from the Waikato Management School as well as the Schools of Arts and School of Social Sciences. The major embraces bi-culturalism and multi-culturalism by conceptualising health in a holistic sense. Moreover, it focuses on key relational and communication skills that are foundational to working with people in the health sector.

With accounting you'll gain the skills you need to become a trusted business adviser and make strategic financial decisions for organisations.

The University of Waikato Hamilton Campus Admission Requirements

The following requirements must be fulfilled to get admitted to the University of Waikato

  • International students are considered on a case-by-case basis. There can be some additional requirements, depending on the program you are applying to.
  • Students are required to submit their original transcripts from their last attended academic institutions. If they are not in English, then submit the translated copies of the same along with the originals.
  • Applicants must be 18 years old at the time of the beginning of the course.
  • You need to submit your English language proficiency test scores if you are coming from a non-English speaking country.

Please note:- If you are not a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of New Zealand, you must obtain a valid study permit before you come to New Zealand.
