Tauranga
The University of Waikato opened in 1964 after many years of energetic lobbying by a group of Hamilton locals, determined to have a university in their city. To begin with, facilities were sparse, but in early 1965 new buildings were officially opened by then Governor-General Sir Bernard Fergusson. Sir Don Llewellyn was founding Vice-Chancellor.
The University of Waikato is committed to delivering a world-class education and research portfolio. With around 13,000 students and 1,500 staff, we offer a distinctive and rewarding university experience, while pursuing strong international links to advance knowledge. The University of Waikato has three unique campuses:
Tauranga Campus
Located in the heart of Tauranga's CBD, our campus offers a modern, multipurpose space that features communal study spaces, a 24-hour computer lab, library, central atrium, lecture theatres and classrooms, Te Manawaroa (a multipurpose space also used for noho overnight stays), an ?tea (open courtyard) and a cafe for students to get their coffee fix with friends. Wifi is available to all students on campus. Log into Eduroam.
Here at Waikato, we provide a range of different accommodation options for our students studying at both our Tauranga and Hamilton campus. Find out more about our accommodation options here, as well as some advice and tips about flatting and renting.

Homestay
Homestay is a great option for international students who want to improve their conversational English and would like to live with a family who can help settle them into life in New Zealand.
Your homestay family will provide you with a room, a bed, desk/table and space to store your personal belongings. You are expected to keep your room clean and tidy and help with household duties as if you were one of the family. They will also provide you with three meals a day, seven days a week.
Flatting and Private Rentals
For students who don’t want to live on campus, there are plenty of flats and rental properties for you to choose from. We recommend that if you choose to rent or flat that you move in early to get settled in before the trimester starts and always have your agreement in writing.
The Tauranga campus provides a contemporary and versatile environment for students, equipped with various amenities such as communal study areas, a 24-hour computer lab, a library, a central atrium, a lecture hall, and classrooms. It also includes additional spaces like Te Manawaroa, which serves as a multipurpose area for overnight stays, an open courtyard called Ātea, and a café where students can socialize over coffee. Furthermore, free Wi-Fi is accessible to all students on the campus.
