There are lots of accommodation options for you to consider while you’re studying at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology. You can choose to share with other students in a flat, hostel, or hall of residence, live with a family in a homestay situation or rent a place on your own.
Flatting (Sharing a House with Others)
In New Zealand, the word flatting means to rent a house with others (flatmates). They might be other students, friends, or people you’ve not met yet. Flatting gives you more freedom but requires a lot of maturities. You'll find lots of helpful information about flatting on the Department of Building and Housing (Tenancies) website. The International Centre team can help you find a flat but you might also find something suitable yourself on one of these websites:
Together, you and your flatmates will be responsible for finding furniture for the flat, sharing the cost of the bills - power, water, phone/internet etc, and cooking your own meals. You’ll also do your own laundry and share the housework. It can take some time to find a flat to rent so if you’re new to the country you might need to stay in temporary accommodation for a few weeks while you look. If you're studying in Rotorua one of the hostels might be your best option.
Backpacker Hostels and Temporary Accommodation
If you google 'backpackers Tauranga' or 'backpackers Rotorua' you'll see there are a number of hostels and backpackers available. These may be a good option while you find something long-term.
Accommodation for International Students Under 18 Years of Age
Students aged under 18 who are not living with their parents must live in a homestay or with a designated caregiver. A designated caregiver must be a relative or close family friend selected by the student’s parents. This needs to be arranged before enrolment. Parents need to fill out a Designated Caregiver's Indemnity Document, and the Toi Ohomai International team will check the accommodation and meet the caregivers to make sure they are suitable.
Homestay Accommodation
Homestay accommodation is an ideal way to become familiar with your new environment and culture while living in a family situation. This will provide you with an opportunity to practice your English on a daily basis.
At Toi Ohomai, you can expect to benefit from a number of advantages, including personalized attention and assistance from tutors in small class settings. You'll receive top-notch instruction in a well-maintained facility and can take advantage of partnerships with other tertiary providers to broaden your study options.
Their strong industry connections ensure that your training is relevant to the real world and may include opportunities for work experience. You can confidently pursue your aspirations with a wide variety of courses and study options. The student support teams are friendly and helpful, and the college offers plenty of activities and events, including competitions, to keep you engaged and entertained.
