Based in Hamilton, the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec), is one of the country’s largest institutes of technology. We deliver high-quality education across vocational (technical) and professional fields of study to approximately 13,000 students, across over 130 different courses.
At Wintec, students are educated in a way that builds their confidence and gets them work-ready. We differ from other types of tertiary providers in the way students get the chance to put their theoretical learning into practice from the very start. You will get to work on real-life projects based on relevant topics and themes as if you were in the workplace. You will also get involved in work placements. This means that by the time you graduate, you will be confident in your skills and knowledge, and know-how to apply your learnings. Our academic staff have years of industry experience between them, which means they can guide you on your journey.

Homestay
Homestay is where you stay with New Zealand families, in their homes. Our Homestay hosts are carefully selected for their kind and caring nature. You will get to improve your English by talking to them; you will also be able to enjoy family activities, celebrations, religious practices, and sporting events.

Wintec boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including a nursing ward for practical training, a sports science performance hub, specialized kitchens and training restaurants, hair and beauty salons, and music and art studios. Some of these facilities are open to the public for a fee, providing you with the chance to apply your knowledge in practical settings.

Natural Sciences & Mathematics
New Zealand Diploma in Applied Science
Students in this program will learn theory and technical knowledge in a range of natural and physical sciences. Students will also learn a range of practical skills, laboratory methods, and the soft skills necessary for further studies in the field of science. Areas of study include chemistry, biology, microbiology, food nutrition, and environmental sciences.
This program is highly practical. Alongside learning theory, students will spend time in the laboratory developing the practical skills that are useful in the workplace.

Food technology is about the science of food. People who choose this pathway can work in entry level positions as food technologists who develop new food products, analyse the components of food, or; food safety officers who audit the food manufacturing industry.
Environmental technology is about the science of conservation, biosecurity and environmental management. People who choose this pathway can work in entry level positions as biosecurity officers who help manage pest animal and plant control, and help conserve local environments.
Biotechnology is about the 'doing' of science, this includes quality assurance of laboratory practices, the analysis of samples and reporting on sample results. People who choose this pathway can work in entry level positions as researchers or laboratory technicians.

Architecture and Construction
New Zealand Diploma in Architectural Technology
Architectural Technicians use their construction and drawing knowledge to make building designs become a reality.
They produce drawings and documents that enable pricing, consenting, and construction of domestic and commercial building projects. They also create architectural models and specifications and may be involved in administering construction contracts.
Students in this program will learn to prepare fully detailed drawings and specifications for the construction of buildings, both manually and using CAD packages.
Students will be equipped to work as an architectural technicians in small-to-medium-scale building projects.
After an additional period of suitable experience, students will be able to work on larger and more complex building projects.
What you will learn
Year one includes documentation for small buildings, materials and structural principles, construction for small buildings, feasibility and environmental impact.
Year two includes construction for medium and large buildings, design in the built environment, virtual design, and construction.

New Zealand Diploma in Business
This program is designed to provide students with a broad base of business knowledge, and gain role-specific skills in either accounting or leadership and management.
All strands will learn about business operational functions, business communication, the New Zealand business context and interpersonal relationships.
In the accounting strand students will study financial transactions, financial statements, budgeting and taxation, and decision-making and analysis. This strand may equip graduates to work towards the academic requirements for CAANZ’s Accounting Technicians College.
In the leadership and management strand students will study business planning, project management, and leadership.

Health Sciences, Nursing and Emergency Services
New Zealand Diploma in Enrolled Nursing
This program is for those who want to work in clinical settings as an enrolled nurse and a valued member of the health team.
Students will gain knowledge in nursing, social science, and the structure and function of the human body. They will learn skills in simulated learning environments which can then be applied on placements in clinical practice. A range of clinical courses in different health care settings will prepare students to practice in areas including rehabilitation, acute care and mental health.
After completing this program students will be able to apply to the Nursing Council of New Zealand to sit an exam to be registered as an Enrolled Nurse; this means they will be able to practise under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
