In common with universities of the pre-modern era, Glasgow originally educated students primarily from wealthy backgrounds; however, it became a pioneer in British higher education in the 19th century by also providing for the needs of students from the growing urban and commercial middle class. Glasgow University served all of these students by preparing them for professions: the law, medicine, civil service, teaching, and the church. It also trained smaller but growing numbers for careers in science and engineering. The annual income of the institution for 2017–18 was £626.5 million of which £180.8 million was from research grants and contracts, with an expenditure of £610.1 million. It is a member of Universitas 21, the Russell Group and the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities.

Kaplan Living Special Support
As part of our commitment to providing the best service and level of care for our students, the Kaplan Living Special Support service offers additional support to students at Kaplan Living Glasgow from January 2021. This service is included in all accommodation packages for students under 18, covered by an additional £300 fee. You’ll benefit from access to Wellbeing Coordinators living in the residence who will be available 24/7 to support you by:

• Answering any questions you may have prior to your arrival
• Helping you settle into life in the UK
• Organising any required self-isolation period
• Assisting with making medical appointments
• Handling any emergencies throughout the night
• Arranging video calls with your parents
• Encouraging you to engage in college and residence activities.

While this service is mandatory for students under the age of 18, it is also available to all other students as a fantastic extra layer of support for while they stay with us.

The university boasts a vibrant and multinational community, consisting of individuals from more than 140 different countries. Students have the opportunity to connect with like-minded peers through over 150 clubs, societies, and sports teams.

Students enrolled in pathway programs not only have the opportunity to explore a campus with breathtaking historical architecture, but they are also provided with university student cards that allow them to utilize the university's contemporary facilities.
