California State University, Fresno has roots dating back to 1911, when the doors of the Fresno State Normal School opened to 150 hopeful students. Today, the student population is more than 25,000+ and the University has garnered national attention for its rise in college rankings.
Fresno State University was founded as a normal school and is a member of the California State University System. It has been offering advanced degrees since 1949. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Its mission statement says in part that the university “provides a General Education program and other opportunities, to expand students’ intellectual horizons, foster lifelong learning, prepare them for future professional study, and instill within them an appreciation of cultures other than their own.” It is classed as a Master’s College and University I by the Carnegie Institute.
The university comprises of eight schools and colleges that offer a range of doctoral, graduate and undergraduate programs in various areas of education such as agriculture, anthropology, arts, design, business, sciences, athletics, communication, computer science, engineering, environment, journalism, nursing, philosophy, psychology, etc. The university has over 24,400 students and more than 2,300 staff members. The university's faculty is highly qualified and distinguished, with 96% of the faculty members holding a doctorate or other highest degrees in their areas of education. The university offers a plethora of career services to its students like career counseling, interview preparation, and resume development. It makes every effort to present its students with excellent job and internship opportunities and encourage them to achieve their goals.
Fresno State's 388-acre main campus and its 1,011-acre University Farm are located at the northeast edge of Fresno, California, at the foot of the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range. The surrounding San Joaquin Valley is one of the richest agricultural areas in the world, and Fresno is the fifth largest city in California. The university is within an hour's drive of many mountain and lake resorts and within a three- or four-hour drive of both Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The Africana Studies program (AFRS) at California State University, Fresno offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that illuminates the connectedness of the human experience and provides culturally-appropriate knowledge and skills. This helps students understand the experiences of African peoples all over the world and other ethnic groups in the United States. The program also involves its faculty and students in research, experiential learning, career counseling, computer technology, curriculum development, conference participation, and extended day, evening, and weekend courses.
Africana Studies emphasizes the study of the history and culture of African Americans as they relate to the experiences of Africans on the continent and other peoples of African descent in the Diaspora. The major in Africana Studies provides an epistemological basis for understanding issues that pertain to the experiences of African peoples and other minority ethnic groups in the American society. The curriculum promotes an awareness of the African heritage of African Americans and others throughout the Americas. Opportunities are provided for students to engage in study abroad and service-learning in Africa and the Caribbean to stimulate intellectual interest in, and linkage to, contemporary Africa and the African Diaspora while enhancing global understanding of the varied social realities of the human experience.
