Georgia State University, which was founded in 1913, is one of the four research institutions that make up the University System of Georgia (USG). Originally known as the Georgia Tech Evening School of Commerce, the institution was renamed the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia in 1947 after the state of Georgia. This institution was later renamed the Georgia State College of Business Administration after the state's governor. In 1955, the institution was accorded the status of a university. The university's name was officially changed to its present form in 1969. Over the years, the institution has grown at a breakneck pace. The Carnegie Foundation has classed it as an R1 research institution, which means it does basic research. The Atlanta Campus of the University of Georgia offers more than 250 degree programmes in more than 100 disciplines of study. The college also provides more than 30 associate degree paths on five sites and online, including the biggest online programme in the state. Currently, the institution has more than 53,000 students from more than 170 countries and territories. A total of five student media groups are represented at the university: The Signal, Neo Network, Album 88 Radio, New South, and Underground.
