University of Connecticut
The University of Connecticut is a national leader among public research universities, with more than 32,000 students seeking answers to critical questions in classrooms, labs, and the community. A culture of innovation drives this pursuit of knowledge throughout the University’s network of campuses. Connecticut’s commitment to higher education helps UConn attract students who thrive in the most competitive environments, as well as globally renowned faculty members. Our school pride is fueled by a history of success that has made us a standout in Division I athletics. UConn fosters a diverse and vibrant culture that meets the needs and seizes the opportunities of a dynamic global society.
On-Campus Housing
UConn has among the highest percentage of students living on campus of any public university in the nation, so your friends will always be around — days, nights, and weekends. UConn housing offerings include residence halls, suites, and apartments, each with their own amenities. Enjoy cable TV, high-speed internet, volleyball courts, makerspaces, game rooms, study lounges — you might never want to leave. In addition, 20 Living/Learning Communities and several Special Interest Housing options provide the opportunity to live with friends who share your interests, lifestyle, or commitment to a major.
At UConn Stamford, students can apply to live in apartment-style University housing located at the center of a vibrant city, steps from campus, internship opportunities, cultural experiences, and more. For more information, visit stamford.uconn.edu.
Off-Campus Housing
The UConn Avery Point campus does not have on-campus residence halls. All students are commuters with some commuting from their homes as well as a good number living in apartment complexes or private homes in the immediate area. Public transportation is available from many locations off-campus and there is a public bus stop on the campus. In addition, UConn Dining Services operates out of Mort’s Café in our Student Center and a varied Meal Program is available for all students. Due to strong student interest in our four-year degree programs, particularly Marine Sciences and Maritime Studies, and the success of our athletic programs, we attract many students from outside the southeastern Connecticut area who are living independently off-campus.
The university offers an exciting opportunity for international students to meet with peers worldwide. Students can access various on-campus entertainment options such as a movie theater, game room, TV lounges, recreation center, art exhibitions, plays, concerts, and stand-up comedy shows. Additionally, the university offers students the chance to participate in study abroad and student exchange programs and secure high-quality internships and lucrative employment opportunities.
At UConn, students have access to over 700 different clubs and organizations, which offer a wide range of opportunities to explore their passions and try new things. Additionally, the university's impressive Student Recreation Center spans three floors and covers 191,000 square feet, providing ample space for students to stay active and engaged.

Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies
Taking as its central mission the study of peoples of African descent on the continent and in the diaspora, the Africana Studies major seeks a nuanced and interdisciplinary understanding of the human experience. The Africana Studies major does so through the humanities, arts, and social sciences, with particular emphasis on continuities and discontinuities across geography and time. Its broad educational objectives are to engender among all students an intellectual appreciation of black lives and their saliency for all human experience; to deepen students’ critical analytic skills; and to value social equality, democracy, and humanitarianism. The Africana Studies major strives to provide students with substantive knowledge of the black world and its linkages to national as well as pre-, sub-, supra-, and transnational processes. Students play an active role in the Africana Studies Institute’s mission to facilitate respect and positive intersocial relationships within the university community. Completion of the B.A. in Africana Studies prepares the student for work in government, community agencies, international organizations, business, journalism and communications, or for graduate studies that lead to careers in research and teaching.
