Founded in 1857, San José State's history began before the Civil War, as the first State Normal School, which trained teachers who educated the people of a young California. Now, SJSU is a dynamic comprehensive university that anchors the 10th largest city in the United States, and Spartans are found around the globe.
As one of the most transformative universities in the nation, San José State is ready for big change. As part of Transformation 2030, SJSU's strategic plan, the campus community is dedicated to realizing the university's potential as a nationally prominent urban public university. San José State provides a comprehensive university education, granting bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in 250 areas of study. With approximately 36,000 students and nearly 4,300 employees, SJSU is an essential partner in the economic, cultural and social development of Silicon Valley and California.
On-Campus Housing
Where you live as a student has a big impact on your educational experience. SJSU offers multiple housing options, from traditional residence halls to Greek houses and downtown city apartments. The University Housing Services website provides information to help you find the right living situation for you. You will find a list of on-campus buildings and current rates, as well as resources for securing off-campus housing, common housing FAQs and more. Please note that all admitted first-time freshmen from outside a 30-mile radius of SJSU are required to live on campus during their first year.
Off-Campus Housing
Students have numerous options of finding accommodation off-campus in nearby areas. Students can have access to studio apartments, paying guest facilities, sharing apartment complexes and many more.
San Jose State University offers a world-class education whether students take classes online or on campus. Students have more opportunities to receive a high-quality education, as well as innovative research and hands-on experiences, as the institution expands its offerings.
Faculty and staff at San Jose State University are committed to achieving the university's mission as a responsive institution of the state of California: to enrich the lives of its students, to transmit knowledge to students along with the necessary skills for applying it in the service of society, and to expand the base of knowledge through research and scholarship in collaboration with nearby industries and communities.
Opportunities for expressing a diverse range of ideas exist thanks to the vibrant campus community and international network of more than 270,000 alumni. Coby Bell (American actor), Omar Benson Miller (American actor), Tom Smothers (American comedian), and Joe Trippi (American political strategist) are some of the notable alumni.

Natural Sciences & Mathematics
Bachelor of Science, Major in Applied Mathematics with Concentration in Applied and Computational Mathematics
This degree is recommended for students who wish to work in the research and development area of industry. This program also prepares a student for graduate study in applied mathematics, numerical analysis, or operations research. The concentration in applied and computational mathematics provides a solid foundation in classical applied mathematics as well as computational mathematics, which could be informally described as "how to employ mathematics on computers wisely." A graduate could seek direct employment assisting a group of scientists with the formulation and solution of problems. There is a great need in local and national technical industries for people with sufficiently strong mathematical knowledge to participate on such teams. For example, modern techniques for solving partial differential equations are very sophisticated; the best method in a given situation depends on the properties of the model. Once a numerical approximation has been formulated, the techniques to solve that, and the commercial software available to do it, again require informed decisions.
