Oswego
Our institution was founded in 1861 as the Oswego Primary Teachers’ Training School by Edward Austin Sheldon, who popularized some of the most innovative teaching methods of his day. Sheldon said his school was the first to combine the object learning method with in-class training for educators. Early Oswego graduates fanned across the nation and internationally to redesign and found countless colleges and schools. Today, the college continues to meet the evolving needs of employers and society in creating and adapting its broad selection of programs.
Lighting the Way Since 1861
For more than 150 years SUNY Oswego has been inspired by those who desire to push traditional higher-education boundaries. Our campus community cares deeply about its students by providing the best facilities and resources, award-winning faculty and dedicated staff, in-demand academic programs, and applied learning opportunities.
At Oswego, our core is our students. We measure the success of the institution on how well we nurture, mentor, inspire, and prepare our students so that they may go on to live ethical and meaningful lives and build a better world as successful graduates.
On-campus housing
International first year undergraduate students are required to live on campus for two years, while transfer students are required to live on campus for the Fall through Spring semesters. Certain exemptions apply, such as married students or students over 21 years old. Please contact the International Student and Scholar Services Office at [email protected] to see if you qualify.
There are 13 different residence halls on SUNY Oswego's campus. Students may choose to live in any of them, except for the Village Townhouse Apartments which are reserved for upper classmen who have already lived on campus for the required number of semesters.
Off-campus housing
Upon completion of their on-campus residency requirement, students may choose to live off campus. There are affordable housing options for students within walking distance or a short bus ride from the SUNY Oswego campus. The local newspaper the Palladium-Times lists rentals in their classified section.
Agreement or leases between landowners and student/tenant(s) are private contracts. SUNY Oswego assumes no obligation for damages, payment of rent, or resolving differences between tenants and landowners. Students are indiviually responsible for their actions under municipal, state, and federal laws. Students are advised to read the terms of the lease carefully, understand the obligations, maintain the property, and obtain a copy of the lease.
The campus community is committed to offering its students the greatest facilities and resources, including dedicated staff, in-demand academic programs, and applied learning opportunities. It aims to deliver the most comprehensive range of services that could benefit many students, including residents, transfer students, commuter students, non-traditional students, disabled students, underrepresented students, and military veterans.
Ticketmaster, bus service, bookstore, social and television lounges, meeting spaces, a hair salon, Internet kiosks, food court, dining and catering services, auditorium, convenience stores, ATMs, copy center, and pool tables are all available. Campus media groups, activity planning boards, and student government are housed in student organization offices.
A few notable alumni of SUNY Oswego, USA are Jerry Seinfeld (American Comedian, Actor, and Writer), Linda Cohn (American Sportscaster), Harry Bronson (Member of the New York State Assembly), Ken Auletta (American Writer) and Steve Levy (American Journalist).
