The School of Health and Biomedical Sciences conducts research in the area of ageing and chronic disease, including:

• Evaluation of interventions for preventing, diagnosing and treating chronic health issues
• Health equity for vulnerable populations
• Mental health, particularly health risk and health-seeking behaviours
• Public health and health services
• You will undertake clinical or experimental research in one of these fields with an individual supervisor overseeing your development and progress.

Research is undertaken in a strongly multi-disciplinary environment that brings clinical and basic researchers together to undertake novel research at the boundaries between disciplines.

A Bachelor of Psychology from RMIT will provide you with a wide range of knowledge and skills in human behaviour.

In addition to the principles of personality, psychopathology and psychotherapy, you will explore social, developmental, biological and cognitive psychology, as well as research methods in psychology.

Thoughout the psychology degree, you will explore topics such as perception and consciousness, theories of learning, memory, cognition, emotion, motivation, and stress. As a student in this degree, you will build the necessary knowledge to perform and oversee a range of diagnostic procedures in a clinical pathology laboratory. You'll also hone your skills in problem solving and critical thinking.

During this degree, you will choose two areas of specialisation. These advanced clinical pathology discipline streams include:

• Anatomical pathology
• Clinical biochemistry

• Transfusion and transplantation science.

The Master of Laboratory Medicine is designed for graduates of general science or biomedical science degrees who are interested in a career in diagnostic pathology or medical research but who lack experience in the diagnostic laboratory disciplines.

We have a multidisciplinary research base that offers opportunities to conduct biomedical research in a range of areas.

Under expert supervision, you will develop your skills and join researchers already active in

• Aquatic and marine biology
• Ecotoxicology (biomarkers for environmental pollutants)
• Environmental and molecular approaches to diagnose and develop solutions for disease, agricultural and environmental problems
• Genomics and sequencing techniques applied to various organisms
• Microbiology (food, medical and environmental biotechnology, vaccine development, fundamentals of pathogen/host interactions)
• Plant biology (plant biotechnology and genomics, molecular plant breeding, ecotoxicogenomics, fire and environmental ecology)
• Genomics and sequencing techniques applied to various organisms.

Biomedical science courses allow you to understand how the human body functions, and the responses of the body to various diseases, exercise, diet, internal disturbances, and environmental influences.

You’ll learn how techniques in molecular biology and genetics are applied to diagnosing genes that cause cancer, making crops and livestock less vulnerable to disease, and making food safer.

You’ll complete studies in cell biology, physiology, microbiology and molecular biology. You can also choose to study anatomy, neuroscience, cardiovascular biology, industrial microbiology, proteomics, pharmaceutical sciences and applied biochemistry.

With advanced technical expertise and research skills, graduates of the Master of Food Science and Technology are fully-equipped to participate in the rapidly advancing field of food science and technology and apply their expertise in inter-disciplinary contexts.

You’ll develop skills and knowledge of food processing and preservation; chemical properties of food materials; food safety, packaging and labelling; and food product and process innovation. You will also undertake subjects to support the wide range of technical positions required by the food industry.
