The Sustainability and Development major trains you to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is an interdisciplinary major that incorporates the perspectives of Development Studies, Anthropology, History, Politics, International Relations, Sociology, Environmental Studies and Economics. By combining relevant theory, with practical skills and experience, you will gain knowledge and competency in the sustainability and development sector.

A Chinese studies major will enable you to understand and use an increasingly significant world language. Chinese is spoken by nearly one-fifth of the global population, predominantly in the world’s second-largest economy, China. The Chinese Studies major will give you the opportunity to develop skills in oral and written Chinese (Mandarin), and enhance your understanding in China’s past (culture and tradition) and present (economy and technology). At more advanced levels, specialist subjects are available in Chinese for academic and professional purposes—these will help you develop your integrated communication skills to a professional level. Studying Chinese language and culture will give you an advantage in a range of industries and area of government, given that China has been Australia’s largest trading partner since 2007. You will have the opportunity to enrol in overseas programs to extend your language skills in-country. (Please note: overseas programs may be impacted by travel restrictions.) The major offers four entry-levels to cater to your standard in the Chinese language. You may enrol at beginners, intermediate, advanced or extension levels depending on your background and experience.

You'll study long-term chronic illness care, Indigenous health, biosciences, emergency healthcare and mental health care. In first year, your hands-on experience begins at our on-campus clinical learning units. In all three years, you'll practice in real-world hospital and healthcare settings.

Human physiological sciences

Explore how the human body functions and how it changes when we’re exposed to different environments. With a major in human physiological sciences, you’ll learn how our organs function in a number of conditions – including when we’re healthy, when we’re exercising and when we develop a disease – and get a taste of what it’s like to be a scientist. Discover how the trillions of cells in our bodies can be divided into groups based on the diverse functions they perform. We’ll examine these functions at the smallest cellular level all the way up to the whole organism level, see how they change during disease and explore how these changes can be prevented with drugs. You’ll be able to further your understanding with access to the latest scientific research taking place within the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Microbiology. Throughout this major, you’ll develop data analysis and research skills by performing your own experiments in practical classes. The Gender, Sexuality and Diversity Studies (GSD) major explores how our bodies and identities are categorised and lived out in social, political and ethical relations. In this major, you will examine the complex inter-relationships between sex, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality, class and disability. You will explore the themes, concerns and perspectives emerging from feminist, LGBTIQ, anti-racist and decolonial social movements so that you can hone your skills in critical thinking, effective writing, media and textual analysis, historical and sociological investigations and legal interpretations.

In the Anthropology major you will study the diversity of human cultures in order to answer fundamental human questions like:

How do culture and society work?

Taking an Anthropology major will train you to analyse local and global cultural differences and social contexts, conflicts and inequalities, and to use engaged and practical methods to understand and positively transform the world locally and globally.
