The Creative and Professional Writing major allows you to hone your writing skills in multiple genres and forms. If you have a passion for telling stories and using language to change the way we see the world, then this major gives you the opportunity to experiment with the short story, extended fiction, creative non-fiction and script-writing. As well as crafting your own pieces, you will learn about the links between creative practice and literary studies and discover how your own writing relates to or challenges literary traditions. You will practice reading as a writer, paying close attention to the strategies other writers use to create mood and meaning.

Over the course of the major, you will develop editing skills in dedicated classes with a focus on current practice in the publishing industry and in peer-feedback workshops. In the Philosophy major you will explore fundamental human questions that can help us explore ourselves and our world. If you have ever puzzled over why some actions or scenarios seem right and others seem wrong, or if you would like to explore what makes a belief in gravity more sensible than a belief in Santa Claus, then our Philosophy major is for you. Big and complex questions often have more than one answer, and you will be trained to think rationally, creatively, and fairly. In the Italian Studies major you will combine the study of the language with the study of Italian culture, literature, cinema, history and translation. The primary focus of this major is on contemporary Italy, but you can explore aspects of early modern, Renaissance and twentieth-century Italy in selected subjects. With a Japanese studies major, you'll build competence in the modern Japanese language and study Japanese society, civilisation and culture.  You will learn to see the world from multiple perspectives through the study of language and culture. You will be taught by enthusiastic staff who specialise in sociology and anthropology of education, minorities, Koreans in Japan, gender, literary studies and popular culture. Japanese Studies major graduates have found employment in teaching, hospitality industry, diplomacy, government, international business, publishing, tourism, and translating, both in Japan and Australia. Japanese is one of the major LOTE subjects in Australian schools.
