This course is designed for graduates with a background in maths and stats, to upgrade mathematical skills, and to gain a deeper understanding of how maths and stats intersect with business, government, and society.

This degree

This degree will consolidate and expand your existing maths and stats knowledge and will educate you in the practice of mathematics in other disciplines such as computer science, business, science, and psychology. You will also develop skills in undertaking research on mathematical or statistical problems that arise in other disciplines, including how to effectively communicate and synthesise complex information with others. Special emphasis is placed on readying graduates for employment through targeted study that focuses on the practical application of maths or stats across a range of industries.

What you will study

In your first year, you will study core preparation and foundational subjects related to your chosen specialisation from the following:

  • Data Science
  • Financial Mathematics
  • Applied Statistics

In your second year, you will study advanced mathematics and statistics subjects aligned to your specialisation, as well as cross-disciplinary subjects in other fields where mathematics and statistics are critical, such as finance, engineering, health, and computer science. You will also complete a research or coursework-focused capstone subject.

Students who do not wish to specialise in a major will build out their degree and subject choices through consultation with the Academic Program Director, allowing you to tailor your subject choices to align with your career goals and interests.

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Dean's Scholar) is for high-achieving students seeking a challenging but comprehensive education in science within a chosen specialisation. There are five major discipline areas to choose from: Cell and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Ecology and Conservation Biology, Geology, and Physical Geography.

The flexible structure of the majors and electives allow you to design a study program to meet your particular interests and abilities. You can combine your chosen science major with a second major chosen from another discipline, or with a range of elective subjects.

Honours is built into the fourth year of the course when you will undertake a substantial piece of supervised research in your major discipline, together with other required seminar and/or coursework.

Progress in atmospheric science relies heavily on the analysis of data produced by satellite-borne and other types of instruments designed by physicists. Atmospheric scientists need a broad scientific basis as well as experience in computing. Biomedical Engineering is a multi-disciplinary field that enables engineers to combine engineering principles with biological and medical sciences. Developments in biomedical engineering provide vital skills and knowledge to enable change to the national health system and improve people’s lives, for example, developments in imaging, instrumentation, robotics, scaffolding, materials engineering, computer science and prosthetics. This degree
You will study a common first year allowing you to learn more about engineering and its different fields before deciding which discipline to study. The common first year provides you with sound fundamentals in mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, computing, engineering science and communication, mechanics, materials and fluids. You then focus on your chosen major study from second year. Your degree includes a 12-week hands-on industry placement.
