Economics

The Economics major provides a broad pluralist perspective on fundamental aspects of relationships between individuals, firms, institutions and countries. Students will learn how economies function and how public policy and the way organisations behave affect diverse social, economic and environmental problems. Students are introduced to a wide array of competing economic theories, so that they are critically informed about the ways in which they can transform the world. A major in Economics prepares students to be active participants in addressing the wide range of problems faced by governments, social organisations and the business community in the domestic and international economies. Students who study economics can expect to develop their analytical and problem solving skills and to be intellectually challenged, whether they view the discipline as providing specific vocational skills or as an area of academic and intellectual interest to them. In the Bachelor of Communication, through classwork, independent study and engagement with the multicultural nature of our communities, students develop an understanding of the local and international relevance of their chosen studies, with opportunities to develop and produce a range of media outcomes as applied research and professional projects throughout their studies.

The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) program satisfies the academic degree requirements for admission to practice as an Australian lawyer. Students will engage in collaborative face-to-face problem and case-based learning, will be supported by online learning materials, and will participate in authentic assessment to develop knowledge and skills.

The program provides students with a broad progressive legal education with a strong practical orientation to the law. Students develop skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, research, communication, collaboration, self-management, and ethical and professional awareness and judgement. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills in legal advocacy, negotiation, and legal technology and extend their professional and learning experiences through work integrated learning, clinical placement and international exchange engagements.

 Public Affairs

The Public Relations major covers the skills and knowledge required in the profession of public relations, including event management, issues and crisis management and campaign development.

The major focuses on the role of the public relations practitioner or adviser and provides a theoretical framework of the industry. Students engage with both theory and practical projects and complete an internship placement.

This double degree provides you with the practical skills and knowledge required to excel in the fields of both business and law. Sport Management

The Sport Management major is designed for people who seek careers in Australian and international Sport management.

Specialist units provide students with a capacity to understand and function within the increasingly dedicated context in which sport is played, organised and managed.

Students who complete this major will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to manage sport experiences pertaining to globalisation and emerging contemporary issues in sport.

Graduates find career employment at all levels of government as well as within the private sector for both commercial and non-commercial organisations.

Western’s Bachelor of Paramedicine gives you the skills and knowledge you need to be a paramedic and play an integral role in the health system, responding to emergencies involving patients with a range of health problems in diverse settings. When you graduate, you will have the required skills to work in an ambulance service, the private paramedical industry or the defence forces.

The Bachelor of Paramedicine has a strong evidence-based focus and uses innovative blended learning and assessment strategies, together with clinical placements, to develop high-level, practical and clinical decision-making skills.

You will be learning in our innovative teaching facility, including simulation rooms, debrief rooms, and an immersive simulation lab with control room.

In second and third year, you’ll be given three months of supervised clinical experience with an emergency ambulance service in rural or metropolitan NSW or the ACT. You’ll also have a chance to take up an international clinical placement, or short placements in the private paramedicine industry, mental health services, and community and primary healthcare.

This program prepares you for out-of-hospital care to patients of all ages, dealing with health complaints that range from minor to critical.

The business component of the double degree will allow you to gain knowledge in one of three core Business areas: Money, Markets or Management. The Money area encompasses majors in Applied Finance and Economics, while Markets centre around majors in Hospitality, Sport Management, International Business and Marketing. Finally the Management area includes majors in Human Resources and Management.

The Honours program is available to high achieving students in the Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine. 

Podiatrists are best known for treating problems that people commonly experience with their feet, but they are increasingly playing an important role in addressing chronic conditions, such as diabetes. 

Honours is a key early step in the path to leadership in the profession and opens up the world of research, without taking any longer to complete the degree. The honours program encourages independent learning, develops research skills and provides an opportunity for deeper investigation in the major field of study.
As a high achieving student you may apply for entry into the Honours program in year 3 of your Bachelor degree. You then begin advanced research training in the latter half of year 3. Clinical placements and an honours thesis are completed during the fourth year of the program.

The thesis presents research that addresses real podiatric problems and education across the lifespan. This research will be conducted under the supervision of experienced academic researchers.

This degree gives you the skills you need to become an in-demand computing professional. You will gain skills in a practice-based learning environment, be introduced to real-world project experience, and acquire a solid knowledge of ICT theory.

Western’s Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology will give you a strong understanding of several industry domains including networking, databases, systems analysis and design and programming.
