The Honours program is available to high achieving students in the Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine. 

Podiatrists are best known for treating problems that people commonly experience with their feet, but they are increasingly playing an important role in addressing chronic conditions, such as diabetes. 

Honours is a key early step in the path to leadership in the profession and opens up the world of research, without taking any longer to complete the degree. The honours program encourages independent learning, develops research skills and provides an opportunity for deeper investigation in the major field of study.
As a high achieving student you may apply for entry into the Honours program in year 3 of your Bachelor degree. You then begin advanced research training in the latter half of year 3. Clinical placements and an honours thesis are completed during the fourth year of the program.

The thesis presents research that addresses real podiatric problems and education across the lifespan. This research will be conducted under the supervision of experienced academic researchers.

This program is designed to give you the skills you need to contribute to the health and rehabilitation of people who are limited in their ability to perform everyday tasks. Western's Bachelor of Occupational Therapy is an accredited program that prepares graduates for this highly regarded field. The first two years of the program combine studies in occupational therapy with a broad understanding of biomedicine, and various health science fields, to develop the professional competencies important for ethical and safe practice. The final two years focus predominately on occupational therapy practice skills, practical experience and specialised areas. This program offers the flexibility of an honours stream for high performing students, as well as an early exit option, allowing students to graduate with a Bachelor of Health Science after three years. To meet the fieldwork guidelines of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, you’ll benefit from hands-on experience and 1,000 hours in a professional practice.

Sustainable environmental

Understanding how life interacts with water, soil and the atmosphere empowers us to develop sustainable management solutions for our most pressing environmental challenges. The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) program satisfies the academic degree requirements for admission to practice as an Australian lawyer. Students will engage in collaborative face-to-face problem and case-based learning, will be supported by online learning materials, and will participate in authentic assessment to develop knowledge and skills. The program provides students with a broad progressive legal education with a strong practical orientation to the law. Students develop skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, research, communication, collaboration, self-management, and ethical and professional awareness and judgement. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills in legal advocacy, negotiation, and legal technology and extend their professional and learning experiences through work integrated learning, clinical placement and international exchange engagements.

Economics

The Economics major provides a broad pluralist perspective on fundamental aspects of relationships between individuals, firms, institutions and countries.

Students will learn how economies function and how public policy and the way organisations behave affect diverse social, economic and environmental problems. Students are introduced to a wide array of competing economic theories, so that they are critically informed about the ways in which they can transform the world.

A major in Economics prepares students to be active participants in addressing the wide range of problems faced by governments, social organisations and the business community in the domestic and international economies.

Students who study economics can expect to develop their analytical and problem solving skills and to be intellectually challenged, whether they view the discipline as providing specific vocational skills or as an area of academic and intellectual interest to them.

Health Informatice

Increasingly, healthcare information is being captured electronically and newer technology modes are being applied in many innovative ways to support efficient and effective clinical care. This major aims to promote understanding of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) concepts in healthcare including electronic healthcare records; healthcare data analysis; fundamentals of medicine concepts and disease classification; healthcare system interoperability and design. This specialisation will prepare students for the ICT challenges ahead in the healthcare domain, and equip students with the knowledge and skills for taking up employment opportunities with major public and private healthcare providers and technology suppliers.

The Master of Chinese Medicine is a postgraduate degree designed for Chinese medicine practitioners wishing to strengthen their knowledge and better integrate into the health care system, and for graduates with a Chinese Medicine specialisation seeking a pathway to research. It can be completed in two years of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time study.

The program includes two major specialisations: a Clinician Specialist Advanced and Research Clinician Advanced. The Clinician Specialist Advanced stream features a substantial clinical placement in a teaching hospital in China affiliated with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) in addition to clinical specialisation workshops. An alternative is also available for students who do not wish to complete the clinical placement overseas. The Research Clinician Advanced stream includes a significant research project which is supported by the National Institute of Complementary Medicine (NICM).

Students who complete the Master of Chinese Medicine from Western Sydney University, including the clinical placement at BUCM, will also be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Chinese Medicine from BUCM. Students may exit the Master of Chinese Medicine after one semester (i.e. after completing 40 credit points) with the Graduate Certificate in Chinese Medicine. Students in the clinical specialisation stream may exit the Master of Chinese Medicine after two semesters (i.e. after completing 80 credit points) with the Graduate Diploma in Chinese Medicine.

A solid foundation in the biological and chemical sciences, needed to underpin food science, will enable graduates from this program to be confident in the rapidly evolving food technology sector. Graduates can pursue opportunities in food formulation, food research and development, quality assurance, food plant management, food molecular biology, flavour chemistry, consumer relations, food quality assurance and teaching. The program is flexible and enables you to undertake units in human nutrition and health, food production, biotechnology, integrated management with industry and community links, with modern sensory and food processing facilities.

This double degree offers a highly valued career path in criminology and law. The Bachelor of Criminology degree offers students the opportunity to study crime and criminal justice in both a conceptual and an applied way that particularly stresses social and cultural definitions of criminality and the reactions to it.

Areas of focus in the Bachelor of Criminology include criminal justice institutions and practices, the development of criminology as a discipline and its various strands, forms and patterns of victimisation, crime prevention strategies and debates, aspects of juvenile justice, the evolution of prisons and different forms of punishment, law enforcement and surveillance, violence, gender and crime, and cultural depictions of crime and contemporary debates in criminology. The degree addresses the criminalisation of disadvantage through race, class, disability and gender, with a focus on the nexus between social and criminal justice. This will equip students with the specialist skills and knowledge that a new graduate would need on entering the workforce or on proceeding to advanced study.
