Geography and Urban Studies

Students in this major examine the geography of contemporary Australian cities and regions. Geography is the integrated study of people, places and environments.

The cutting edge interests of today’s Geographers include post-colonialism, the emergence of global information economies, indigenous issues, class and cultural disparities, population movement, sexuality and space, and the global diffusion of popular culture.

Urban Studies is a newer discipline focused on social justice within the city, through its critical assessments of peoples’ access to scarce urban resources, such as housing, transport, education and employment.

The political, economic, and cultural forces that shape cities and urban policy are the key concerns of the Urban Studies curriculum. These applied interests in urban well-being and city structure are the intellectual basis for the Urban Planning profession.

Public Relations

The Public Relations major covers the skills and knowledge required in the profession of public relations, including event management, issues and crisis management and campaign development.

The major focuses on the role of the public relations practitioner or adviser and provides a theoretical framework of the industry. Students engage with both theory and practical projects and complete an internship placement.

This program combines tourism, event management, social science, business and marketing subjects to prepare graduates for professional roles in tourism, events, and the visitor economy. Students can choose from a suite of majors, including: environmental management, event and festival management, heritage, marketing, place management, planning, sport and sustainability.

The program has been developed with industry to ensure students develop the skills and knowledge desired by employers. Students complete fieldwork, engage with industry and government stakeholders, and are provided with opportunities for international fieldtrips and placements. A final-year professional placement allows students to gain further industry experience and provides a stepping-stone into employment.

Place Management and Planning

This unique major combines subjects from tourism, heritage and planning to prepare students for careers in place management. Place managers use collaborative approaches to design and develop a wide diversity of spaces and places, including precincts, destinations, towns, cities, parks, and many more. In this major, students will develop the skills and knowledge to manage places sustainably in a variety of contexts. This includes the ability to balance competing community, cultural, ecological and economic interests. Students who complete the major will be well positioned to apply for a growing number of place management positions with government and consultancies.

The Graduate Diploma in Aged Care Management will allow staff, particularly those in supervisory and management positions working in aged care, in public, private or charitable organisations to up-skill their management knowledge by exposing them to socio-political issues in aged care. It provides further training in organisational capacity and leadership in aged care practice.

This program equips graduates of this program to position themselves at the forefront of innovation in the organisation and delivery of quality aged care services. It provides an entry point to the Master of Health Science for those who wish to continue on their professional development journey with further studies.

Heritage and Tourism

Mobile Computing

This major covers theories and technologies used for the development of distributed applications for hand-held mobile devices. Students completing this major will understand the advanced principles related to mobile hardware devices, data storage and transmission, and communication networks. In addition they will identify, analyse, and formulate solutions to real-world problems in the mobile domain. In devising these solutions students will also consider principles associated with user interface design, professional and ethical issues, in particular those relating to security and privacy of user data and user behaviour related to mobile devices and its applications.

Applied Physics

Applied Physics uses the principles and tools of physics to understand and manipulate the world around us, and covers fields as diverse as astrophysics, biophysics, magnetic resonance (i.e., NMR and MRI), medical physics, remote sensing, semiconductor physics, space science and much more.

In this major, the core principles of physics, mathematics and computing are taught and used to study specific applications of physics. Students have access to world class facilities (e.g, telescopes and onsite ultra-high field MRI), and the expertise of international researchers. Graduates of this major possess skills in problem-solving and critical thinking together with deep knowledge of Physics.
