Heritage Tourism

In a highly mobile world (migration, tourism, media and communications, travel and transport) and in contemporary life where the preservation of historical and natural environments present as one of the major challenges facing all societies, heritage has become a touchstone for social and cultural identity, our understanding of modernity, peace and development, our senses of citizenship, custodianship and community. At the same time heritage places have become significant tourist destinations and so in a world of flows and networks, the heritage-tourism relationship is a critical one. In the 21st century it is impossible to disentangle the two.

This major introduces contemporary heritage issues and provides an in-depth understanding of tourism as a social phenomenon. It enables a critical examination of the relationship between heritage and tourism in number of settings within Australia (including Indigenous Australia) and internationally.

Graduates with a heritage and tourism major can contemplate careers within a diverse range of government, non-government organization and businesses that require understanding, insight and skills related to heritage and tourism.

This degree is suited to those interested in becoming an innovative, articulate musician who contributes to the music community and today’s culture.

Music graduates who previously would have planned to pursue contracts with one or more large record companies or orchestras now have a future where they will be able to self-publish their work to the world, or they may require a more entrepreneurial approach than that previously required of a musician or music technologist.

This double degree brings together the existing Music program with emerging creative industries and allows students who are interested in pursuing careers in music to also engage with new paradigms of creative and cultural production, developing skills in entrepreneurship and working in collaborative projects with creative industries in Greater Western Sydney.

Many future challenges exist at the nexus of environment, infrastructure and technology. Solutions to these will demand innovative engineering combined with applied science and business acumen. Marketing

Marketing focuses on the exchange process built around understanding and satisfying the needs and wants of customers. Often this is associated as doing business within a highly competitive business environment, yet marketing strategy is also important for government and not-for-profit organisations. This major introduces students to the core concepts of marketing theory, consumer behaviour, marketing communications, brand management, and marketing strategy. Graduates are equipped with the skills for marketing careers in a range of diverse industries across an international platform. This major satisfies the educational requirements for recognition as a Certified Practising Marketer and eligibility for membership of the Australian Marketing Institute.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program is designed for students with interests in learning to address humanity’s issues and challenges through the development and deployment of technical solutions.

This program spans all major engineering domains and prioritises industry relevance via an emphasis on work integrated learning to ensure students are career-ready on graduation. In addition to becoming technical experts in their chosen field of specialisation, students are also challenged to become collaborative and innovative problem solvers with an appreciation for the importance of sustainability and global citizenship.

Civil

Civil engineering covers the fields of structural design, geotechnical engineering and water engineering, together with infrastructure design and environmental engineering. Graduates may pursue career paths in the fields of design, construction and management of engineering structures and be associated with private industry, government departments, or in city, municipal or shire councils. These career paths may include engineering projects related to residential and commercial buildings, highways and airports, water supply and sewerage schemes.

In this degree, you will explore the worlds of criminology and crime, and gain fascinating insights into our criminal justice institutions and practices. You will graduate with a strong understanding of crime prevention strategies and debates, victimisation, juvenile justice, prisons and different forms of punishment. This degree equips students with the specialist skills and knowledge to enter the professional workforce.

Western’s Bachelor of Criminology allows you to study crime and criminal justice in a conceptual and applied way, and gain an understanding of how these things affect society. It gives you the skills and knowledge you need to take on a career in the police force, corrective services, and the criminal and community justice systems.

You will learn about law enforcement and surveillance, violence, gender and crime, restorative and international criminal justice, cultural depictions of crime, and contemporary debates in criminology. This outstanding double degree program combines a 4 year Bachelor of Engineering (honours) degree with the 3 year Bachelor of Business degree to yield a course of study that takes only 5 years to complete (in Full-time mode).The Engineering component of this program is offered at the Penrith and Parramatta City campuses, and the Business component is offered at the Parramatta City campus.

Mechanical

Mechanical engineering is a dynamic area involving the design and build of moving machines including engines that power transportation, industrial machinery, and a range of tools. Students put the core concepts of mechanical engineering, energy, thermodynamics, mechanics, kinematics, and fluid mechanics, into practical application in workshops, industry projects, and work integrated learning. Students design and construct machines and tools, monitor and evaluate their performance. Employment opportunities include automotive or mechanical engineer, control and instrumentation engineer.

Mathematics plays a crucial role in almost every sector of the economy. From finance to engineering, teaching, medicine and politics – mathematics is essential to model, analyse and solve problems.

The essence of mathematics is the use of abstraction and logic to discover, describe and completely and unambiguously understand systems.
