Cooperative education (Co-op)
Cooperative education (Co-op) allows students to integrate their classroom learning with a real-world experience though paid work terms. Two academic terms prior to the cooperative education work term, students are required to actively participate in and successfully complete the self-directed co-op online readiness activities and in-person workshops.

Students must actively conduct a guided, self-directed job search and are responsible for securing approved program-related paid co-op employment. Students compete for co-op positions alongside students from Algonquin and other Canadian and international colleges and universities. Algonquin College`s Co-op Department provides assistance in developing co-op job opportunities and facilitates the overall process, but does not guarantee that a student will obtain employment in a co-op work term. Co-op students may be required to re-locate to take part in the co-op employment opportunities available in their industry and must cover all associated expenses; e.g., travel, work permits, visa applications, accommodation and all other incurred expenses.

Co-op work terms are typically 14 weeks in duration and are completed during a term when students are not taking courses.

International students enrolled in a co-op program are required by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to have a valid Co-op/Internship Work Permit prior to commencing their work term. Without this document, International students are not legally eligible to engage in work in Canada that is a mandatory part of an academic program. This four-year degree program is designed for students seeking careers in the hospitality, culinary, food services and food science sectors through a unique combination of food science and culinary skills. Well suited for those with a passion for food and a love of science, this program produces skilled graduates with culinary and food science backgrounds equipped with the abilities to create innovative, high quality food products for existing and emerging markets.

Through combining the disciplines of food science and culinary arts, students develop the necessary skills and knowledge to become professionals within this innovative and emerging field. Students examine a broad range of topics including food chemistry, food microbiology, sensory evaluation, food processing, as well as culinary science and food service management, with a focus on food product development and enhancing the nutritional value of food products. These core science skills are complemented by advanced skills in food preparation, cooking, baking, safety and sanitation, management and leadership. Through applied research in product development, students have the opportunity to research, create and market their own products. In addition, students participate in two practical cooperative education learning opportunities gaining valuable applied industry experience.

Major food companies and producers seek individuals who have the ability to design, develop and process quality food choices that are healthy, affordable, desirable and safe for consumers. Graduates are well positioned to find employment opportunities with major food manufacturers or small, private label companies, in the areas of food production management, food technology, product development, quality assurance management, food services and food research and development as well as in health-related industries or entrepreneurial endeavours. Algonquin College is working closely with the Research Chefs Association (RCA) in seeking RCA`s accreditation as a Culinology(R)program. Graduates of this program are well positioned to write RCAs Certified Research Chef examination.

The one-year Teachers of English as a Second/Foreign Language Ontario College Graduate Certificate program is designed to give you a theoretical and hands-on foundation to help you develop proficiency in English as a Second/Foreign Language teaching methodology.

This program is officially recognized by TESL Ontario and TESL Canada and is available on campus or through synchronous online delivery.

The two-year Computer Programmer Ontario College Diploma program prepares you for a career in software development. The program also specializes in program development strategies (using object-oriented modelling), database design and database administration.

Use leading industry software products such as Oracle and CASE tools. Learn about programming languages such as Java, COBOL, SQL and PHP. Study object-oriented analysis and design, operating systems and coding in integrated environments, and learn how to debug, test, and maintain codes.

In your final semester, participate in a software development project working with external clients to gain real-world experience in the programming field.

The two-year Motive Power Technician - Diesel Equipment and Truck Ontario College Diploma program, delievered in a compressed format over 42 weeks, prepares you to enter a variety of careers in the heavy equipment repair and service industry.

This program gives you a combination of hands-on skills and theoretical knowledge for the diesel equipment and truck repair and service industry.

Through a series of classroom-based courses and extensive practical labs, you learn skills specific to heavy trucks and diesel equipment, including

Accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC), Dental Assisting (Levels I and II) is a one- year certificate program that allows the students to enhance their skills and knowledge and practice in ethical and professional dental settings. The students have a provision of client care in Algonquin College’s onsite dental clinic and participate in a two- week (60 hours) placement in a dental office and thus develop expertise in intra-oral care, oral health education and promotion, radiography, clinical chair side and laboratory skills. 

The graduates of this college are eligible to give the National Dental Assisting Examination Board (NDAEB) examination which is a requirement to practice as a Level II Dental Assistant in Ontario and are also eligible to apply for certification with the Ontario Denal Assistants Association (ODAA).

Architectural Technology is the third year of an Ontario College Advanced Diploma program that prepares you for a career in the architectural profession and the construction industry. The program gives you the credentials, the knowledge and the skills necessary to further define your career. Graduates of the two-year Architectural Technician Ontario College Diploma program may consider taking the third year, Architectural Technology program to build on their previous studies.

In the Architectural Technology program, you focus on commercial construction and large buildings, as defined in the Ontario Building Code. You participate in a team project that brings together all facets of building construction, including:

• Design and technical resolution with the integration of building and material detailing
• Structural and mechanical layout design for a commercial building assembly
• Revit Architecture is used to execute the design and technical resolution for the project.

Massage Therapy is a three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma program that prepares students with the required skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to offer safe, ethical and effective care at entry level practice in the profession of massage therapy. The foundation of the program is based on the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics given by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) and the curriculum focuses on developing in the students the skills of pathophysiology, entrepreneurship, professionalism, empathic responses, anatomy, decision making, massage theory, critical thinking, communication and physiology.  Students develop specialized knowledge, skills and judgment in conducting a systematic client assessment, formulating a comprehensive and clinical impression, developing a specific treatment plan, performing safe, competent, and comprehensive massage therapy and evaluating outcomes.
