Environmental geoscientists apply their unique understanding of the Earth’s composition, structure and physical processes to protect the environment and predict geologic and hydrologic hazards.

New geoscientists, trained in environmental disciplines, are required to meet environmental and resource management challenges. Current trends suggest that in North America, employment in the environmental geoscience disciplines will grow faster than the average for other occupations.

Brock’s program is designed to comply with the educational requirements for licensing as a geoscientist-in-training, the licensing classification that leads to the PGeo designation, established by the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario.

The Tecumseh Center for Aboriginal Research and Education offers a few alternatives for those keen on working in an indigenous teaching condition. 

The people group put together educational program model depends with respect to qualified Aboriginal teachers to encourage the instructive adventure. Courses are offered in an encouraged learning associate model in areas over the territory. A determination of Indigenous Studies courses are offered in the campus such as: 

• BED in Aboriginal Adult Education 
• Certificate in Aboriginal Adult Education or language 
• BED primary/ junior 
• Minor in Indigenous studies 
• Indigenous Certificate program- Gidayaamin

Study the “science of choice” — learning how limited resources can best be used to meet the needs of individuals and society. You’ll look at how individual consumers choose to spend their time and money, and how producers predict and respond to consumer needs.

You’ll gain an understanding of the economy as a whole, from the banking system, unemployment, government debt and taxation, to international trade and exchange rates, and natural resource use and conservation.

You’ll study for six years to complete an Honours BA in Child and Youth Studies and a Bachelor of Education (BEd) at the same time.

This concurrent degree integrates theoretical and practical knowledge, and includes a unique undergraduate program, which focuses on understanding children, childhood and youth. Opportunities for field experiences begin in second year, with a required service-learning placement, and continue throughout the program.

Sociology as a discipline challenges everyday assumptions about the world in which we live. Sociologists turn ‘common sense’ ideas on their head through critical examination of social institutions, relationships and conditions shaping the world and the experiences of individuals.

Sociology students are encouraged to develop and employ their sociological imagination to examine the complex social world, relationships and the human condition.

Three-degree streams are available, as single majors or combined majors between Sociology and other disciplines. A collaborative program is also offered, where students may earn both a degree and a diploma.

Are you interested in how children acquire language, how the skills of second-language speakers develop, how various language disorders can be diagnosed and treated, or how social or cultural environments interact with language?

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL): Learn how second language learning is different from first language learning, and prepare to teach ESL in different contexts. Learn about advanced theory and practice of second language learning and teaching, and complete a major research paper in our MA Applied Linguistics/TESL program.

The Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film offers four separate programs of study in Business Communication, Media and Communication Studies, Film Studies, and Popular Culture. A four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours degree, a 4 Year BA with Major, and a three-year program leading to the BA Pass degree is offered in all four programs. Majors in the Department may complete a Concentration in Digital Culture. Minor programs are available in Digital Culture, Film Studies, Media Studies and Popular Culture for majors in other Departments/Centres as well as a Certificate in Film Studies. In addition, the Department is involved in programs with community colleges which offer students the opportunity to earn a BA Honours Communication Studies, BA Honours Popular Culture or a BA with Major Film Studies degree and a college diploma or certificate.

Communication Studies
Business Communication
Students in Business Communication must attain a minimum 65 percent major average to continue in the program. Business Communication is an interdisciplinary program combining the study of communication with a study of some aspects of business. The program aims to equip the student with a sound theoretical basis for analysing and practicing communication within the business environment.

Media and Communication Studies
Media and Communication Studies is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the impact of media and communication in the creation of meaning, identity and social change, emphasizing the study of media content, audiences and institutions in their political, economic, and social contexts in Canada and elsewhere.

Film Studies
Film Studies is a sequence of critical and historical courses that examine a variety of approaches to film. The courses explore the nature of film language and develop an analytical perspective on film as both an art and a medium. Other courses explore issues and theories in popular culture. Students may have opportunities to engage in media production in selected upper year courses.

The Earth Sciences program trains geoscientists — scientists who study the Earth and other planets in order to better understand their origin and history.

We know the Earth’s history reasonably well, and that knowledge has helped us to discover natural resources, such as oil and gas, economic minerals and metals, and to understand phenomena, such as global climate change and volcano and earthquake hazards. The geological knowledge derived from the Earth also helps us to better understand other solar system bodies. Two of our professors are planetary geologists, including Dr. Mariek Schmidt who is a member of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory Project that operates the rover Curiosity as it explores Gale Crater.

Classics presents an integrated study of the worlds of ancient Greece and Rome in order to better understand the origins of many contemporary artistic and literary traditions and social institutions.

In Classics, we examine ancient languages, history, art and archaeology in ways that allow you to engage with the ancient world on many levels.

Our extensive experiential opportunities range from the preparation of ancient feasts to curatorial and archaeological experiences at Brock and overseas. In the summer, we offer courses on archaeological excavations and study tours in the Mediterranean region to explore ancient art and culture directly.

You may choose to specialize in one of the following areas:

• Ancient Art and Archaeology examines the culture of the ancient Mediterranean from the perspectives of anthropological archaeology and art history.
• Classical Civilization is an option for those interested in creating their own customized program of study in Classics. Courses in ancient Greek and Latin language are not required.
• Greek and Roman Studies combines the study of Greek and Roman history, religion and literature-in-translation.

A career-focused and multi-faceted approach to criminal behaviour, law, and the criminal justice system.

Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice (FPAC) offers an exciting opportunity to study criminal behaviour and criminal justice in a uniquely diverse way. Using the tools and perspectives of psychology, criminology, child and youth studies, and political science, students will learn about the individual, social, cultural, and systemic factors that influence criminal and aggressive behaviour, and the institutions that make up the criminal justice system.

Through either a four-year Major or Honours degree, FPAC prepares students for a variety of interesting and engaging careers, including law, corrections, counselling, policing, criminology, policy analysis and administration, and advocacy.

Students will work with dynamic, award-winning professors dedicated to teaching and research, and FPAC offers practicum opportunities to gain real-world experience with our community partners in law enforcement, forensic research, and clinical settings.
