LCBE prepares graduates for positions in community-based educational settings with internships and an introduction to Canadian workplace practices.

Program Outline
LCBE courses are designed to provide essential knowledge about educational theories and leadership practices and to develop critical communication and collaboration skills, preparing the student to seek employment in community-based education settings or pursue advanced post-secondary studies in Canada.

Students wishing to pursue a pattern of studies that does not coincide with either a single major or a combined major program may choose either a Bachelor of Arts (Pass) Degree in General Studies or Bachelor of Science (Honours or Pass) Degree in General Studies.

This program is for those who have already completed a university degree. The program is four semesters, taken over two academic years, allowing students time to learn, reflect and grow as beginning teachers.
Completion of the program leads to a BEd degree and an Ontario Certificate of Qualification and Registration. Programs are at campuses in both St. Catharines and Hamilton.
Teacher Education programs at Brock embrace the integration of theory and practice.
Students are placed in partner schools very early in their program. They move through a planned course of study, including in excess of 80 days in Ontario classrooms. With a focus on pedagogy reflective of 21st century learners, Brock teacher candidates have opportunities to personalize their learning through optional professional development courses, and may qualify for an alternative placement experience in their final year.
Instruction in professional practice takes place under the supervision of practicum advisers, practicum instructors and associate teachers, working with teacher candidates
in schools throughout the Niagara and the greater Hamilton regions and beyond.

Primary/Junior program: Certifies to teach Kindergarten through Grade 6.
Junior/Intermediate program: Certifies to teach Grades 4 through 10, emphasizing elementary school.
Intermediate/Senior program: Certifies to teach Grades 7 through 12, emphasizing secondary school.

These include post-secondary contexts and training and development in public and private sectors such as health care, human resources, business, community services and industry. Programs are offered on a part-time basis and may be completed entirely online. Adult Education programs do not lead to an Ontario Certificate of Qualification for the K-12 education sector

Are you interested in how children acquire language, how the skills of second-language speakers develop, how various language disorders can be diagnosed and treated, or how social or cultural environments interact with language?

In our program, you’ll gain a strong foundation in linguistics, hands-on fieldwork, clinical observation, teaching practice and practical workshops to supplement your academic courses. We offer a choice of two majors:

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL): With this certificate or major, learn how second language learning is different from first language learning, and prepare to teach ESL in different contexts. Learn about advanced theory and practice of second language learning and teaching, and complete a major research paper in our MA Applied Linguistics/TESL program.

Speech-Language & Hearing Sciences: Learn about basic science and communication processes, including the anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, acoustics, linguistics, child language development and selected disorders of human communication. Concentrate in Hearing Sciences and learn about sound, hearing, and hearing disorders, and prepare for admission to graduate audiology programs. Concentrate in Speech-Language Sciences and learn about speech, language, and speech and language disorders, and prepare for admission to speech-language pathology graduate programs.

We offer courses in French language, translation and linguistics, as well as courses on literature from French-speaking countries around the world.

Culture and civilization courses highlight the painting, architecture, music and historical events that appeared along with literary texts throughout the centuries in France. We offer a variety of opportunities to study in a French-speaking milieu, including short-term spring and summer courses in Quebec.

Our state-of-the-art Multimedia Language Learning Centre provides you with audiovisual, web-based and computer-based opportunities for language learning.

You’ll work with the very best faculty, artists and theatre professionals from Niagara, the GTA and beyond.

As part of the core, you will take courses that integrate theory and practice (praxis). These involve a mix of lectures and studio work that explore ways in which creativity and analysis are linked culturally and historically.

You may choose one of the following areas of concentration:

• Drama in Education and Applied Theatre explores theatre’s impact outside the traditional theatre space, including the ways drama and theatre activities enhance the learning process.
• Performance involves a core series of courses to actualize your potential as a stage actor.
• Production and Design prepares you for production work, crewing, design and other elements of technical theatre stagecraft.

Our programs combine academic study with unique practical experience in critical thinking and writing. Courses explore literature from Britain, the United States and Canada, as well as works written in English from all over the world.

The Writing, Rhetoric and Discourse Studies program combines practical and theoretical studies with instruction in a range of writing genres for students interested in communications, public relations, journalism and professional writing for organizations.

State-of-the-art equipment and internationally recognized faculty and research projects make our department a dynamic and exciting place.

Studies concentrate on various aspects of solid-state and materials research, from superconductors to soft-condensed matter systems. Our undergraduate students are involved in research — some have even published papers before graduation.

The study of Political Science aims to teach students how to focus on the ideas, institutions and processes that shape our lives, helping them to become better members and effective leaders of the Canadian political community.

In Canadian Politics, Comparative Politics and International Relations, you’ll examine power relationships and the organization of power within and among states. The study of Public Policy asks how policies are made and implemented in the complex machinery of government. Political Theory/ Philosophy asks how power ought to be organized and to what end.
