Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement. You will study the anatomy and physiology of body movement, including issues related to the maintenance, rehabilitation or enhancement of movement and performance.

Our Bachelor of Kinesiology (BKin) degree emphasizes the biophysical, behavioural and socio-cultural aspects of kinesiology, including exercise prescription and rehabilitation, fitness programming and clinical assessment. This degree trains effective health professionals who will transfer scientific theory into practice.

Biophysics is the physics of life, of all living systems and their interaction with their surroundings, both natural and artificial. It is a rapidly advancing field, encompassing a wide variety of areas in natural and life sciences.

Biophysics uses all methods of scientific inquiry — theory, experiment and large-scale computer simulation — to understand living systems at the molecular level.

Biophysics also forms the basis of many aspects of medical physics, another rapidly developing field in much demand right now.

Brock’s Biophysics program will provide you with a superb learning environment and exciting research opportunities. Extended research opportunities are available through Brock’s participation in the Biophysics Interdepartmental Group (BIG), based at the University of Guelph.

Sociology as a discipline challenges everyday assumptions about the world in which we live. Sociologists turn ‘common sense’ ideas on their head through critical examination of social institutions, relationships and conditions shaping the world and the experiences of individuals.

Sociology students are encouraged to develop and employ their sociological imagination to examine the complex social world, relationships and the human condition.

Three-degree streams are available, as single majors or combined majors between Sociology and other disciplines. A collaborative program is also offered, where students may earn both a degree and a diploma.

You’ll be on the forefront of research in this exciting and knowledge-based industry. You’ll take courses in biological sciences, chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology, exploring the use of living organisms to produce goods and services for practical and industrial purposes.

Career opportunities in biotechnology are expanding rapidly due to a dramatic increase in global market demands for biotechnology products.

As a modern biotechnologist, you’ll study areas such as recombinant DNA technology, genetic and protein engineering, cell fusion, and gene cloning and expression.

Are you interested in how children acquire language, how the skills of second-language speakers develop, how various language disorders can be diagnosed and treated, or how social or cultural environments interact with language?

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL): Learn how second language learning is different from first language learning, and prepare to teach ESL in different contexts. Learn about advanced theory and practice of second language learning and teaching, and complete a major research paper in our MA Applied Linguistics/TESL program.

This theoretical and practical training offers an approach to understanding children, childhood and youth that includes: diversity, inequality, exceptionalities, families, cultures, social worlds, schools, peers, communities, popular and media culture, and international issues that span the globe. This wide-ranging knowledge base opens up doors to working with young people in a variety of capacities.
The department has been offering undergraduate degrees since 1993, an MA program since 2000 and a PhD program since 2016.
Our faculty includes many nationally and internationally recognized scholars who work to high standards for teaching and research. Our staff work closely with them to guide our students through their programs. We are all approachable and dedicated to maintaining the highest quality of education.
Experiential learning opportunities are offered in Years 2, 3, and 4 of the program with a required experiential course in Year 2.

Combined Programs
You can combine your degree in subjects like psychology, sociology, geography and linguistics.
Minor programs
If you are not a CHYS major, you can apply to minor in CHYS after your first year. CHYS students can also minor in unrelated disciplines to further expand their studies.
A collaborative program is also available to complete both a degree and diploma.

These include post-secondary contexts and training and development in public and private sectors such as health care, human resources, business, community services and industry. Programs are offered on a part-time basis and may be completed entirely online. Adult Education programs do not lead to an Ontario Certificate of Qualification for the K-12 education sector

Labour Studies is an interdisciplinary field and is home to popular courses, including Labour of Sport, Labour and Employment Law, Animals at Work, and our simulation-based Collective Bargaining course.
You’ll find a mix of theoretical and applied courses designed to prepare you for a wide range of careers in labour and employment relations, workplace education and training, public policy and administration, and social justice and advocacy.
You may pursue a Labour Studies degree or a combined Labour Studies degree with a co- major in Political Science, Sociology, History, Geography, Economics or Women’s and Gender Studies.

Co-op Education

The Labour Studies Co-op program offers students a combination of rigorous training in academic theory and practical skills in an off-campus, work based setting. Co-op students gain an enriched understanding of their academic program through practical application. Students develop and refine employability skills, gain an understanding of career opportunities in their field, and gain an understanding of the realities of the workplace.

The Earth Sciences program trains geoscientists — scientists who study the Earth and other planets in order to better understand their origin and history.

We know the Earth’s history reasonably well, and that knowledge has helped us to discover natural resources, such as oil and gas, economic minerals and metals, and to understand phenomena, such as global climate change and volcano and earthquake hazards. The geological knowledge derived from the Earth also helps us to better understand other solar system bodies. Two of our professors are planetary geologists, including Dr. Mariek Schmidt who is a member of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory Project that operates the rover Curiosity as it explores Gale Crater.

Brock’s program is designed to comply with the educational requirements for initial registration as a geoscientist-in-training, the licensing classification that leads to the PGeo designation established by the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario.

This program is ideal for students who are interested in acquiring a well-rounded understanding of health and wellness at the individual and societal levels.

Students will learn the principles behind health promotion and disease prevention, as well as the major determinants of human health, including social, biological, and environmental.

For students with health-related college diplomas, this program provides an opportunity to update their knowledge or enhance their credentials. A set number of credits may be granted to allow for a more expedient completion of the program.
