Are you interested in how children acquire language, how the skills of second-language speakers develop, how various language disorders can be diagnosed and treated, or how social or cultural environments interact with language?

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL): Learn how second language learning is different from first language learning, and prepare to teach ESL in different contexts. Learn about advanced theory and practice of second language learning and teaching, and complete a major research paper in our MA Applied Linguistics/TESL program.

The Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film offers four separate programs of study in Business Communication, Media and Communication Studies, Film Studies, and Popular Culture. A four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours degree, a 4 Year BA with Major, and a three-year program leading to the BA Pass degree is offered in all four programs. In addition, the Department is involved in programs with community colleges which offer students the opportunity to earn an honours degree in Communication Studies and a college diploma or certificate.

You’ll be on the forefront of research in this exciting and knowledge-based industry. You’ll take courses in biological sciences, chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology, exploring the use of living organisms to produce goods and services for practical and industrial purposes.

Career opportunities in biotechnology are expanding rapidly due to a dramatic increase in global market demands for biotechnology products.

As a modern biotechnologist, you’ll study areas such as recombinant DNA technology, genetic and protein engineering, cell fusion, and gene cloning and expression.

We are ranked highly among undergraduate Canadian universities in medical and science research grants. You’ll have access to modern labs and the teaching and research knowledge of professors who have received provincial, national and international acclaim for their work.

Lectures, laboratories and field studies will introduce you to the breadth of Biological Sciences, after which you can design your program from courses in biochemistry; cell biology; developmental biology; animal, plant and microbial physiology; genetics; molecular biology; neurobiology; ecology; animal behaviour and bioinformatics.

This program is for those who have already completed a university degree. The program is four semesters, taken over two academic years, allowing students time to learn, reflect and grow as beginning teachers.
Completion of the program leads to a BEd degree and an Ontario Certificate of Qualification and Registration. Programs are at campuses in both St. Catharines and Hamilton.
Teacher Education programs at Brock embrace the integration of theory and practice.
Students are placed in partner schools very early in their program. They move through a planned course of study, including in excess of 80 days in Ontario classrooms. With a focus on pedagogy reflective of 21st century learners, Brock teacher candidates have opportunities to personalize their learning through optional professional development courses, and may qualify for an alternative placement experience in their final year.
Instruction in professional practice takes place under the supervision of practicum advisers, practicum instructors and associate teachers, working with teacher candidates
in schools throughout the Niagara and the greater Hamilton regions and beyond.

Primary/Junior program: Certifies to teach Kindergarten through Grade 6.
Junior/Intermediate program: Certifies to teach Grades 4 through 10, emphasizing elementary school.
Intermediate/Senior program: Certifies to teach Grades 7 through 12, emphasizing secondary school.

The study of Political Science aims to teach students how to focus on the ideas, institutions and processes that shape our lives, helping them to become better members and effective leaders of the Canadian political community.

In Canadian Politics, Comparative Politics and International Relations, you’ll examine power relationships and the organization of power within and among states. The study of Public Policy asks how policies are made and implemented in the complex machinery of government. Political Theory/ Philosophy asks how power ought to be organized and to what end.

You’ll work with the very best faculty, artists and theatre professionals from Niagara, the GTA and beyond.

As part of the core, you will take courses that integrate theory and practice (praxis). These involve a mix of lectures and studio work that explore ways in which creativity and analysis are linked culturally and historically.

You may choose one of the following areas of concentration:

• Drama in Education and Applied Theatre explores theatre’s impact outside the traditional theatre space, including the ways drama and theatre activities enhance the learning process.
• Performance involves a core series of courses to actualize your potential as a stage actor.
• Production and Design prepares you for production work, crewing, design and other elements of technical theatre stagecraft.

Co-op Education

The Bachelor of Accounting Co-op program prepares the students to get a public accounting license for themselves. The students can gain up to twenty months of practical work experience toward their designations, and the successful completion of the program gets them a degree in Bachelor of Accounting (Honours). The BAcc Co-op program designation will be awarded to those students who have completed a minimum of 12 months of Co-op work experience.

The Professional Masters Preparation Certificate (PMPC) is an eight-month preparation program that guides you through the challenges that you will encounter as an international student in a North American professional graduate school. We’ll help you improve your English language skills, gain confidence in academic situations and create a North American academic record. The PMPC is dedicated to helping you overcome foreseeable academic and cultural difficulties and acquire the understanding and skills to make the transition to graduate work smoother and ultimately more successful.

The PMPC is a formal certificate program. Students who successfully complete this program will receive a Brock University certificate. You will also be considered for conditional admission to either the MBA (ISP) or MPAcc (ISP) for the next intake when you apply.

Our programs combine academic study with unique practical experience in critical thinking and writing. Courses explore literature from Britain, the United States and Canada, as well as works written in English from all over the world.

Our English Language and Literature and English and Contemporary Culture programs introduce students to a wide range of literary forms, historical periods and theoretical approaches. They provide superb preparation for education and law degrees, careers in public relations and communications or graduate studies in Library Science and English.

The English and Creative Writing program uses lectures and practical workshop courses to examine the material and social contexts of creative writing and teach the craft of key literary genres.

The Writing, Rhetoric and Discourse Studies program combines practical and theoretical studies with instruction in a range of writing genres for students interested in communications, public relations, journalism and professional writing for organizations.
