Program Outline

Labour Studies is an interdisciplinary field and is home to popular courses, including Labour of Sport, Labour and Employment Law, Animals at Work, and our simulation-based Collective Bargaining course.

You’ll find a mix of theoretical and applied courses designed to prepare you for a wide range of careers in labour and employment relations, workplace education and training, public policy and administration, and social justice and advocacy.

You may pursue a Labour Studies degree or a combined Labour Studies degree with a co- major in Political Science, Sociology, History, Geography, Economics or Women’s and Gender Studies.

Environmental geoscientists apply their unique understanding of the Earth’s composition, structure and physical processes to protect the environment and predict geologic and hydrologic hazards.

New geoscientists, trained in environmental disciplines, are required to meet environmental and resource management challenges. Current trends suggest that in North America, employment in the environmental geoscience disciplines will grow faster than the average for other occupations.

Brock’s program is designed to comply with the educational requirements for licensing as a geoscientist-in-training, the licensing classification that leads to the PGeo designation, established by the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario.

The Honours Critical Criminology degree provides students the opportunity for an extensive examination of whose interests are served by ‘law and order’ ideologies, policies and practices of social control.

This degree offers a distinct orientation to law making, law breaking, law enforcement and social reaction. Students will look beyond crime and punishment and explore larger issues of surveillance, criminalization, interpersonal and structural violence, and more. The Honours BA in Critical Criminology will expose students to criminology in the broader context of theories of justice and equity — an important distinction both in the field and in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Students can expect to graduate equipped with advanced training in theory and methods, as well as applied and practical experience, in order to become leaders in areas such as law, policy, research and data analysis, and public accountability arenas.

The Master of Education (MEd) program is designed for individuals from a variety of backgrounds and occupations who have an interest in advancing their knowledge of education. We offer full and part-time study options with a Course-based Pathway (CBP) and two Research pathways: Major Research Paper (MRP) or Thesis. While some courses are offered face-to-face, online and in blended formats the MEd program is a campus-based face-to-face program and cannot be completed entirely online. Students are required to come to campus. Full-time students in the Research pathways are eligible for funding.

For students in the CBP Pathway, the option to complete up to two concentrations in areas of interest is available. Options include:

Brock University offers the first Bachelor of Public Health degree in Canada and equips the students with the skills and knowledge required to manage the upcoming issues in Public health, learn about the social, environmental and biological determinants of health issues and explore disease prevention and health promotion strategies.

The students study chronic and emerging health issues, and diseases in the developing and developed countries and the program focuses on the health and wellness of the individual, the community and the population as a whole with emphasis on health policy, health administration, health promotion and health programming and evaluation.

The program offers multiple opportunities to the students for internships with community partners, international study placements, self-directed study, research experiences and internships where they can apply their skills to developing public health programs and policies, conducting health research and planning, implementing, and managing disease prevention and health promotion programs.

Biophysics is the physics of life, of all living systems and their interaction with their surroundings, both natural and artificial. It is a rapidly advancing field, encompassing a wide variety of areas in natural and life sciences.

Biophysics uses all methods of scientific inquiry — theory, experiment and large-scale computer simulation — to understand living systems at the molecular level.

Biophysics also forms the basis of many aspects of medical physics, another rapidly developing field in much demand right now.

Brock’s Biophysics program will provide you with a superb learning environment and exciting research opportunities. Extended research opportunities are available through Brock’s participation in the Biophysics Interdepartmental Group (BIG), based at the University of Guelph.

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science is suitable for people who wish to pursue a pattern of studies that don’t coincide with a combined major program or a single major. The program is available as a 15- credit degree and the requirement for graduation with a Bachelor of Arts (Pass) Degree Social Sciences is a minimum of 60 per cent overall average on completion of program requirements. The degree will carry no major or area concentration.

With an emphasis on quantitative, communication and analytical skills, you’ll be well prepared for a variety of careers in both the public and private sectors of the economy. After your first two years, you may specialize in one of the following two areas:

• Financial Economics combines economics with finance knowledge.
• Consumer Economics combines economics with marketing expertise.

The study of Political Science aims to teach students how to focus on the ideas, institutions and processes that shape our lives, helping them to become better members and effective leaders of the Canadian political community.

In Canadian Politics, Comparative Politics and International Relations, you’ll examine power relationships and the organization of power within and among states. The study of Public Policy asks how policies are made and implemented in the complex machinery of government. Political Theory/ Philosophy asks how power ought to be organized and to what end.
