Sociology as a discipline challenges everyday assumptions about the world in which we live. Sociologists turn ‘common sense’ ideas on their head through critical examination of social institutions, relationships and conditions shaping the world and the experiences of individuals.

Sociology students are encouraged to develop and employ their sociological imagination to examine the complex social world, relationships and the human condition.

Three-degree streams are available, as single majors or combined majors between Sociology and other disciplines. A collaborative program is also offered, where students may earn both a degree and a diploma.

Recreation professionals deliver health, social, economic, and environmental benefits through leisure services.

You may choose one of the following areas of concentration:

• Community Recreation studies leisure services in diverse and changing communities, including management, community development and the needs of participants. Career opportunities exist in municipal and non-profit organizations, program development, and facility management with children, youth and seniors.
• Outdoor Recreation focuses on leadership in the natural environment. You’ll prepare to serve as a wilderness trip leader, facilitate groups in outdoor recreation settings, work in outdoor and experiential education environments, and promote social and environmental change in the world. Activities include lectures, outdoor and experiential activities, and small group work. Career opportunities exist in environmental education, outdoor adventure and leadership, K-12 classroom teaching, wilderness therapy, camp administration, ropes course facilitators and builders, and change makers.
• Therapeutic Recreation is focused on the goal of ensuring that all individuals, regardless of ability, have access to meaningful leisure in their lives. You’ll gain hands-on experience in providing services to marginalized individuals (people with disabilities and illnesses, recent immigrants, people who experience poverty and
• older adults), using leisure to improve functional abilities and quality of life. Career opportunities exist in rehabilitation centres, hospitals, mental health centres, long-term care homes, community organizations and private practices.

You’ll study for six years to complete an Honours BA in Child and Youth Studies and a Bachelor of Education (BEd) at the same time.

This concurrent degree integrates theoretical and practical knowledge, and includes a unique undergraduate program, which focuses on understanding children, childhood and youth. Opportunities for field experiences begin in second year, with a required service-learning placement, and continue throughout the program.

Learn and think about children, childhood and youth through diverse lenses. Our unique program draws on psychology, education, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, and criminology — among other disciplines — to really understand young people and their perspectives.

This theoretical and practical training offers an approach to understanding children, childhood and youth that includes: diversity, inequality, exceptionalities, families, cultures, social worlds, schools, peers, communities, popular and media culture, and international issues that span the globe. This wide-ranging knowledge base opens up doors to working with young people in a variety of capacities.

The department has been offering undergraduate degrees since 1993, an MA program since 2000 and a PhD program since 2016.

Our faculty includes many nationally and internationally recognized scholars who work to high standards for teaching and research. Our staff work closely with them to guide our students through their programs. We are all approachable and dedicated to maintaining the highest quality of education.

The Distinct and Diverse Communities program involves courses offered through Brock University and Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology. This four-year program combines either an Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) Distinct and Diverse Communities or a BA With Major Distinct and Diverse Communities at Brock with training in a variety of applied social service settings at the colleges.

Students obtain both solid applied skills and a strong theoretical foundation in a variety of aspects of social services. The program leads to career opportunities in a wide variety of areas in the social services for Immigrants and Refugees in the Province of Ontario. At Brock, students complete an integrated series of courses from a wide variety of disciplines. At Seneca students complete the Social Service Worker - Immigrants and Refugees program. Obtaining both an Honours BA or BA with Major and a college diploma would ordinarily involve at least five years of study, but this Brock-Seneca program combines the two in a single integrated package that can be completed in four years. Enrolment is limited.

The study of Political Science aims to teach students how to focus on the ideas, institutions and processes that shape our lives, helping them to become better members and effective leaders of the Canadian political community.

In Canadian Politics, Comparative Politics and International Relations, you’ll examine power relationships and the organization of power within and among states. The study of Public Policy asks how policies are made and implemented in the complex machinery of government. Political Theory/ Philosophy asks how power ought to be organized and to what end.

The program centers on the biophysical establishment of human wellbeing, with courses in life structures, physiology, science, and science, notwithstanding the social parts of wellbeing. It incorporates propelled courses with research center segments in clinical the study of disease transmission, human immunology, restorative microbiology, parasitology, pharmacology, cardiology, and pathology. 

Abundant open doors for experiential learning exist inside the program at spots, for example, the Brock-Niagara Center for Health and Well-Being. 

Understudies will finish course work and have investigated openings in the cutting edge Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex at the University. 

This program has been produced for the individuals who need to proceed with concentrates in medication, dentistry, restoration or word related treatment, among others. Relevant Careers which can be pursued by the applicant are physician, Dentist, Optometrist, Pharmacist, health researcher.

Brock University offers the first Bachelor of Public Health degree in Canada and equips the students with the skills and knowledge required to manage the upcoming issues in Public health, learn about the social, environmental and biological determinants of health issues and explore disease prevention and health promotion strategies.

The students study chronic and emerging health issues, and diseases in the developing and developed countries and the program focuses on the health and wellness of the individual, the community and the population as a whole with emphasis on health policy, health administration, health promotion and health programming and evaluation.

The program offers multiple opportunities to the students for internships with community partners, international study placements, self-directed study, research experiences and internships where they can apply their skills to developing public health programs and policies, conducting health research and planning, implementing, and managing disease prevention and health promotion programs.

Study the “science of choice” — learning how limited resources can best be used to meet the needs of individuals and society. You’ll look at how individual consumers choose to spend their time and money, and how producers predict and respond to consumer needs.

You’ll gain an understanding of the economy as a whole, from the banking system, unemployment, government debt and taxation, to international trade and exchange rates, and natural resource use and conservation.
