Our programs combine academic study with unique practical experience in critical thinking and writing. Courses explore literature from Britain, the United States and Canada, as well as works written in English from all over the world.

Our English Language and Literature and English and Contemporary Culture programs introduce students to a wide range of literary forms, historical periods and theoretical approaches. They provide superb preparation for education and law degrees, careers in public relations and communications or graduate studies in Library Science and English.

The English and Creative Writing program uses lectures and practical workshop courses to examine the material and social contexts of creative writing and teach the craft of key literary genres.

The Writing, Rhetoric and Discourse Studies program combines practical and theoretical studies with instruction in a range of writing genres for students interested in communications, public relations, journalism and professional writing for organizations.

The graduates of the course will have a comprehensive understanding of the issues and current trends in education and early care for children, starting from birth to eight years old and will be prepared to work or further study in the field of education and care for young children.

The graduates of this program are expected to take on positions that need a strong foundation in early care and education, to teacher education programs towards an Ontario Teaching Certificate or apply to graduate studies.
 

The Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film offers four separate programs of study in Business Communication, Media and Communication Studies, Film Studies, and Popular Culture. A four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours degree, a 4 Year BA with Major, and a three-year program leading to the BA Pass degree is offered in all four programs. In addition, the Department is involved in programs with community colleges which offer students the opportunity to earn an honours degree in Communication Studies and a college diploma or certificate.

The Earth Sciences program trains geoscientists — scientists who study the Earth and other planets in order to better understand their origin and history.

We know the Earth’s history reasonably well, and that knowledge has helped us to discover natural resources, such as oil and gas, economic minerals and metals, and to understand phenomena, such as global climate change and volcano and earthquake hazards. The geological knowledge derived from the Earth also helps us to better understand other solar system bodies. Two of our professors are planetary geologists, including Dr. Mariek Schmidt who is a member of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory Project that operates the rover Curiosity as it explores Gale Crater.

Brock’s program is designed to comply with the educational requirements for initial registration as a geoscientist-in-training, the licensing classification that leads to the PGeo designation established by the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario.

Our Bachelor of Business Economics program is unique in Canada. If you’re interested in combining the studies of economics and business, this degree offers you the best opportunity.
With an emphasis on quantitative, communication and analytical skills, you’ll be well prepared for a variety of careers in both the public and private sectors of the economy. After your first two years, you may specialize in one of the following two areas:

• Financial Economics combines economics with finance knowledge.
• Consumer Economics combines economics with marketing expertise.

Environmental geoscientists apply their unique understanding of the Earth’s composition, structure and physical processes to protect the environment and predict geologic and hydrologic hazards.

New geoscientists, trained in environmental disciplines, are required to meet environmental and resource management challenges. Current trends suggest that in North America, employment in the environmental geoscience disciplines will grow faster than the average for other occupations.

Our program is designed to meet the needs of a rapidly evolving industry, incorporating principles of sustainability (economic, environmental, social and political) in tourism management and planning. Within the Department of Geography and Tourism Studies, our program examines such questions as: Can we balance the economic benefits of tourism with the negative consequences of pollution, loss of biodiversity, economic inequality and unsuitable cultural change?

Allied with the Goodman School of Business, the Tourism Management stream offers a range of business-related courses.

Our Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program combines professionally oriented business courses with studies in social sciences, humanities, and mathematics and science.

A combination of case studies, experiential learning, small classroom lectures, group projects and independent work will help you develop key business skills, including oral and written communication skills; ethical, analytical and problem-solving skills; and critical reasoning skills. These skills are in high demand from employers.

You may tailor your degree to meet your personal goals.
