Acquire the knowledge necessary for an engagement with the critical dimensions of global politics. This specialization takes a problem-focused and applied approach to the study of global political issues such as economic relations and the gap between rich and poor, democracy and its economic and political benefits, human rights and the different emphasis placed upon rights by different societies, war and peace, ethnic conflicts around the world, and the politics of the environment. You will gain the skills and experience necessary to better understand and engage in the myriad of arenas in which global politics takes place, including the United Nations, development banks, civil society organizations, refugee organizations, international NGOs and others.

If you are also interested in Computer Science, consider our BMath Combined Honours program in Computer Science and Mathematics. This limited enrolment program, similar to the Bachelor of Computer Science program, places equal emphasis on Mathematics and Computer Science. 

Carleton’s Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) is a wide-ranging and career-focused program that will provide you with the skills required to succeed in the rapidly changing worlds of medicine, biomedical research and healthcare research. You will gain a strong foundation in the scientific knowledge and methods involved in the study of human health, along with the capacity to engage in broader multidisciplinary, multi-sector, and multicultural approaches to finding solutions to some of the most crucial health issues of our time.

Health Throughout the Lifespan
This concentration focuses on health and illness through the stages of human life. There are few health sciences programs in Canada that include lifespan studies, and Carleton’s program is unique in featuring courses that explore the entire lifespan, from neonatal development to old age. You will learn about the biological aging process, including how events occurring early in life can have effects that appear much later, in the form of medical conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and depression. In addition, you will explore the biomedical basis of health and disease, and have the opportunity to learn how factors such as gender and social conditions can influence health.

Computer game development has become a sophisticated subject, drawing on advanced knowledge in a number of areas of computer science, such as artificial intelligence and computer graphics. In this stream, you will learn about both the principles and practice of designing and developing modern computer games.

In addition to core courses in computer science, this stream includes foundational courses on algorithms. These courses will teach you to design, analyze, experiment with and reason about algorithms that arise in modern applications such as search engines, games, social networks, markets, economics and computer networks. The stream is especially suited for students with strong mathematical ability who wish to pursue an advanced degree or a career in cutting-edge research.

Cognitive science involves the study of cognition, perception, and emotion from a wide range of perspectives. Despite the many different methodologies they use, cognitive scientists are united in their interest in the mind—and the brain.

Researchers in our program (students and faculty members) study the mind by combining the methods and theories of five disciplines: psychology, philosophy, linguistics, neuroscience and computer science. This interdisciplinary approach allows unique insights into human understanding, thought, perception, language and emotion.

The Bachelor of Cognitive Science is offered as an Honours program with either a thesis or coursework option, and as a three year degree.

Psychologists study the mechanisms that underlie our thoughts, emotions and behaviours. They examine a diverse range of topics, such as how we think and learn, how we interact with others and how we can promote healthy development and wellness. This is accomplished by conducting research so that the knowledge gained can help us to better understand the human mind, enhance well-being and performance, and generate additional research questions.

All of our programs provide opportunities to explore psychology’s major areas within the context of an active and diverse research environment. Our honours programs offer six concentrations for students wishing to focus on one of these major areas.

The BSc in Interdisciplinary Science and Practice integrates concepts and knowledge from different science disciplines to be applied to real world problems through local and global perspectives. This program innovates the conventional science curriculum to entrench the principles and practice of interdisciplinarity, and includes a 15-credit degree and 20-credit Honours degree.

Students are asked to complete eight interdisciplinary science courses and one minor within the Faculty of Science. Honours students are also encouraged to complete a second minor within the faculty with learning culminating in an academic capstone experience (group research project, research essay or individual research project).

Engineering Physics is a challenging and elite program for those students who want to combine the strengths of physics and engineering. You will obtain an unusually broad and strong foundation in material science, applied physics, electronics and nanotechnology, and learn to apply it in the development of new technologies which include, but are not limited to, nanotechnology, semiconductor devices, optical systems, telecommunications and related computer hardware. In your senior year, you may specialize in many other areas of interest.

Learn to efficiently and effectively develop reliable and secure software. You will focus on methodologies and techniques for the design, implementation, and validation of large-scale cost-effective software systems.
