In the first year of this two-year program, students acquire the occupational skills and knowledge required for entry into the Heavy Mechanic Trades (HMT) industry. These skills include brakes; pneumatics; hydraulics; electrical, electronics; frames; steering; and suspension. The second year begins with heating, ventilation and air conditioning followed by all aspects of engine and supporting systems. This includes dissembling and rebuilding engines and supporting systems; troubleshooting and repairing fuel injection systems; and diagnosing engine brakes and diesel emission systems. The final semester in the second year includes trailer service; repair and diagnosing of all trailers and related components; powertrains, which speaks to clutches, manual transmission, torque converter, drivelines and automatic transmissions; and final drives and drivelines. More information can be seen in the semester syllabus. All training topics are based on the Industry Training Authority (ITA) outlines should students wish to pursue ITA certification. This diploma provides the students with the knowledge needed to challenge the HDM Standard Level Exam (SLE-1). The overall material covered is broader than the foundational level program and enables students the breadth of knowledge in a 2-year credential. This scope serves to enhance an apprenticeship pathway exceeding industry demand. Industry apprenticeship hours and challenge exam are not part of this diploma program.
