Psychology encompasses all aspects of human and animal behaviour. Dalhousie offers the largest Psychology department in the region and you'll have plenty of opportunities to get involved in research. In addition to offering insight into the way people think and behave, our program will provide you with skills in critical and analytical thinking that will serve you in any of your future career paths.

What will I learn?
If you’ve ever wondered why we do the things we do or how people think, behave and interact with others, then you’ve wondered about topics studied in psychology. When you study psychology at Dalhousie, you'll learn about experimental design, statistical analysis, brain function, language development, learning mechanisms, psychopathology and treatment and more.

In your first year of study, you'll take introductory courses in psychology and neuroscience to provide you with a foundation for more in-depth studies in upper years. Fourth-year students will have the opportunity to complete their own honours research project to discover topics that are of personal interest.

If you thrive in a smaller campus environment with average class sizes of 20 to 30 people, consider doing the first two years of your degree on our Truro campus. After completing your first two years (and earning an Engineering diploma), you will move to the Halifax campus to complete the final two years of your degree.

CIVIL ENGINEERING
Civil engineers provide a major contribution to society. They design and construct the infrastructures we use every day, from the roadways we travel on to the power stations that provide our homes with electricity.

Areas of focus
Students who choose to complete a degree in Civil Engineering will choose one of two distinct areas of focus:

• Option 1: Infrastructure
  • Students who choose structural engineering and materials will focus on the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructures, including buildings, bridges, highways, airports, power plants and tunnels and the materials that will ensure their resiliency and sustainability. This stream allows students to choose technical electives from any of the sub-disciplines in Civil Engineering.
• Option 2: Earth and Environment
  • With a focus on water and wastewater treatment, solid waste management, and environmental systems analysis, students will learn to identify and design solutions to mediate and mitigate human impacts on the environment. Students in this option may choose to specialize in the Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences courses that are directly relevant to the Civil Engineering profession.

The public sector is made up of governments and their agencies, from the international level to the local level. It includes other publicly funded bodies, such as hospitals, schools, government corporations (CBC, Canada Post, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, etc.) and many not-for-profit organizations. The MPA degree will prepare you for the realities of working in the public sector, where the internal environment (visioning and goal-setting, decision-making, managing, accountability and conduct) is distinct from the for-profit sector.

The Electrical and Computer Engineering undergraduate program is divided into two divisions, the lower division for the first two years and the upper division for the remaining two or two years and eight months.  A student may apply for and enter the lower division at Dalhousie University or at any of the Associated Universities in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The Associated Universities are Acadia University, Cape Breton University, St. Francis Xavier University, Saint Mary's University, and the University of Prince Edward Island. Once a student completes the studies in the lower division, he/she will obtain the Diploma of Engineering. Then he/she may apply for and enter the upper division either in the non co-op stream which takes two years to complete or in the co-op stream which takes two years and eight months to complete. The co-op stream requires a student to take at least three terms to work in industry while registering in the Electrical and Computer Engineering undergraduate program; as a result, a non co-op student will take two years to complete the upper division while a co-op student takes two years and eight months to complete. Once a student completes the upper division, he/she will receive the Degree of Bachelor in Engineering with or without the co-op designation accordingly. The tables below summarize the schedules of electrical and computer engineering program. A student needs to select and register one of the program schedules once he/she enters the upper division. Note that although Dalhousie University has a co-op office to help find the co-op work, not all the students can find the job placements for their work terms all the time. If this happens, a student registering with the co-op program may have to switch back to the non co-op program.  In addition, this Department offers the accredited Electrical Engineering Bachelor degree program with the curriculum options of either electrical or computer engineering. This Department does not offer a separate accredited computer engineering Bachelor degree program.

BENG IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING
Industrial Engineers optimize processes and systems by finding ways to save time, money, energy, and materials. Through mathematical models, Industrial Engineers design systems and methods that will help businesses meet their production goals. Whether it's streamlining the manufacturing processes of automobiles to make cars more affordable or optimizing the nursing staff at a hospital to improve patient care, career options span a range of industries.

Co-op options
Co-op students take the same academic program as the non co-op program; however, our co-op option gives you an opportunity to complement your studies with three paid work terms.

Whether caring directly for patients, conducting valuable research or engaged in public policy advocacy, nurses make a difference in the quality of people's lives. Dal's Nursing program will prepare you to apply current evidence and respond with professionalism to the health and illness needs of people in a variety of health-care settings: hospitals, homes, schools, businesses, clinics and communities. At Dal, you'll find flexible program options and hands-on learning opportunities alongside world-class faculty.

Biology is the study of life and living things. You’ll examine the physical and biological processes that affect the life and death of genes, cells, individuals, populations, species, and ecosystems.

Depending on your interests and the courses you take, you might learn how to identify indigenous flowering plants, go scuba diving to conduct underwater experiments, or venture out on the ocean to study minke and humpback whales. You’ll look at the simplest forms of plants and animals—think algae and one-celled organisms—as well as the highly complex.

You’ll attend classroom lectures and have access to Dalhousie’s amazing research facilities. But you’ll also get out into the world and apply your classroom knowledge hands-on—whether you participate in the Science Co-op program and work in a research lab off campus, or travel to one of Nova Scotia’s beautiful coastal areas to collect samples from a tidal pool.

When you study Plant Science at Dalhousie, you’ll gain a solid understanding of the ideas and methods used in biological, physical and behavioural sciences. You’ll acquire a very sound knowledge of plants, along with practical and life-long learning skills, all while studying at Dalhousie's beautiful Agricultural Campus in Truro, N.S.

What will I learn?
Plant Science will give you the knowledge and skills to research and investigate real-world problems associated with food security, quality and wellness. You’ll also dive into contemporary issues related to environmental integrity, biotechnology, plant breeding, sustainable crop production and more.

You will learn both the theory and practices related to the study of plants and their production. Your studies may lead you to expertise in many sub-disciplines such as fruit, vegetable, ornamental or field crops. You may focus on the genetics or physiology of plants or learn how to manage different types of farming systems.

In your first year of study, you’ll take foundation-building science courses in biology, chemistry, calculus and agricultural ecosystems and microeconomics. In your upper years you’ll study more in-depth subjects such as structural botany, entomology, plant pathology and soil fertility and nutrients. Students can tailor their degree to their personal interests by choosing from numerous electives.  

The program also includes production courses which provide students with opportunities to gain knowledge and skills focused on areas of production such as greenhouse and floriculture, forages and cover crops, organic field crop management plus many others. Gain a deep understanding of the theory, design and application of computer science by exploring a wide range of areas including software development, algorithms, networking and artificial intelligence.
