When you study Plant Science at Dalhousie, you’ll gain a solid understanding of the ideas and methods used in biological, physical and behavioural sciences. What will I learn?
Plant Science will give you the knowledge and skills to research and investigate real-world problems associated with food security, quality and wellness. You’ll also dive into contemporary issues related to environmental integrity, biotechnology, plant breeding, sustainable crop production and more.

You will learn both the theory and practices related to the study of plants and their production. Your studies may lead you to expertise in many sub-disciplines such as fruit, vegetable, ornamental or field crops. You may focus on the genetics or physiology of plants or learn how to manage different types of farming systems.

In your first year of study, you’ll take foundation-building science courses in biology, chemistry, calculus and agricultural ecosystems and microeconomics. In your upper years you’ll study more in-depth subjects such as structural botany, entomology, plant pathology and soil fertility and nutrients. Students can tailor their degree to their personal interests by choosing from numerous electives.  

The program also includes production courses which provide students with opportunities to gain knowledge and skills focused on areas of production such as greenhouse and floriculture, forages and cover crops, organic field crop management plus many others. The discipline of earth sciences play a crucial role in answering questions like these about today's complex world. Studying earth sciences gives you insights into the Earth's evolution, composition, processes, and future.

Field work is an important part of Dal’s Earth Sciences program. You'll explore the fascinating and diverse geology of Nova Scotia, or take part in an off-site computing camp. Taking Advanced Field School provides you with opportunities for in-depth study abroad, in countries such as Italy, Chile, or England. Are you interested in physical activity, cardiac health and ergonomics? We’ve got you covered. Kinesiology is a multidisciplinary approach to the study of human movement and our program offers you a wide variety of classes taught by professors known for their research. Tailor your degree to your interests with the option to focus on a specific study stream — fitness and lifestyle, ergonomics, or coaching science — or pursue an all-around combination of classes.

What will I learn?
The courses you take will depend on your personal interests. You’ll gain a broad background in various subdisciplines of kinesiology, including anatomy, physiology, neurophysiology, biomechanics, movement control and psychology of performance. You’ll also be exposed to the foundational sciences such as biology, physics, psychology and mathematics.

In your upper years, you can choose whether you’d like to do a general degree in kinesiology or apply to one of the three focused streams: ergonomics, fitness and lifestyle or coaching science. If you’re accepted into one of the streams, you'll need to take certain courses to complete your degree.

Along with your course learning, you’ll also gain experience in research methodology and have the opportunity to complete an independent research project. The 25-hour practicum in your final year will allow you to enhance your studies and put learning into practice in a professional setting.

Chemical Engineering combines the principles of mathematics, chemistry and physics with engineering practices in order to improve the human environment. Chemical engineers deal with the transformation of raw materials into products we use every day – from soaps and cosmetics to plastics and food processing. Chemical Engineers have been long been regarded as the most versatile of all engineers; yet many opportunities exist to specialize in a particular area.

You will learn to utilize the world’s limited resources by using solid scientific methods that measure and analyze the choice made by people and institutions.  The traditional way of teaching helps students to learn and utilize their skills and knowledge in the best possible way.  

Graduates of the program work in various fields as they can apply principles of economics to anything. The program helps you to shape public life and society as you may work as a policy advisor, politician, or business consultant. 

You'll have the alternative to pick courses that are more designed for the sociologies instead of the math side of the financial hypothesis. So, there is a characteristic association among math and financial matters that may rouse you to fabricate your math aptitudes. 

While studying at our Agricultural Campus in Truro, you gain insights into problem solving, diagnostics and whole-system analysis. You learn business and science in the context of social and environmental responsibility, using sustainable production systems. You acquire a theoretical knowledge of plants. 

The students learn by doing: through labs, experiments, and growth trials, they develop a practical skill-set through hands-on experiences.

What will I learn?
The Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies is a two-year program entered after completing two years of university studies in another subject. You take courses in design, humanities, technology and professional practice.
You'll work individually and collaboratively on design projects in the studio, learning manual skills in drawing, modeling, and building and then the equivalent digital skills.

The four-month co-op work term is a great way to begin applying new knowledge in a professional architectural practice. Co-op work terms include opportunities across the country and around the world and typically involve various aspects of building design, including design drawing, model-making, computer drafting and construction supervision.  

Biology is the study of life and living things. You’ll examine the physical and biological processes that affect the life and death of genes, cells, individuals, populations, species, and ecosystems.

Depending on your interests and the courses you take, you might learn how to identify indigenous flowering plants, go scuba diving to conduct underwater experiments, or venture out on the ocean to study minke and humpback whales. You’ll look at the simplest forms of plants and animals—think algae and one-celled organisms—as well as the highly complex.

You’ll attend classroom lectures and have access to Dalhousie’s amazing research facilities. But you’ll also get out into the world and apply your classroom knowledge hands-on—whether you participate in the Science Co-op program and work in a research lab off campus, or travel to one of Nova Scotia’s beautiful coastal areas to collect samples from a tidal pool.

The International Food Business program is a unique opportunity for students who are interested in understanding the global food industry from the farm gate to the consumer's plate. This one-of-a-kind program at the Faculty of Agriculture in Truro, N.S., will award you two degrees within the standard four years of study: a Bachelor of Business Administration from Aeres University in the Netherlands and a Bachelor of Agriculture in International Food Business from Dalhousie.

What will I learn?
In year one, North American students will study at Dalhousie and European students will study at Aeres. Year two is offered in the Netherlands, where both groups of students will study and explore together. This continues in year three when both groups of students study at Dalhousie's Faculty of Agriculture at the Agricultural Campus in Truro, N.S. You complete year four at your home university.

Our innovative team and module-based program of study is built around the competencies you'll need to succeed as a business leader in the international food industry. During ten modules presented over the first three years of the four-year degree, you'll be introduced to a range of food business concepts, including global supply chain logistics and new product development.

In these modules, you'll be assigned a series of real business tasks that become progressively more involved. To help you successfully complete these tasks, you'll be assigned internationally experienced professors who will provide key theories, concepts, skills, and practices.

What will I learn?
Develop solutions to real-world problems using proven technologies. You’ll learn to combine a deep understanding of technology with problem-solving, communications, and management skills. You'll analyze problems, manage and lead teams to tackle those problems, and communicate solutions and opportunities back to the wider organization.
