The Bachelor of Music offers centered music concentrates to get ready alumni for vocations or further examination in numerous territories, including execution, hypothesis, musicology, and that's only the tip of the iceberg. Why study Marine Biology at Dal?

You could find yourself on the water studying the behaviour of sperm whales, running your own underwater experiments, examining the diet of grey seals or assessing the diversity of marine birds.

What will I learn?
There’s no better place to learn about the ocean than right here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. You’ll venture out to the ocean, both on shore and on the water. You’ll observe examples of Atlantic Canada’s spectacular marine life. You’ll get first-hand experience in various research methods, like gathering live samples and collecting and assessing data. These are just a few of the advantages of studying marine biology at Dalhousie.

During your first two years, you’ll take general biology courses and foundation-building science courses. In third and fourth year, you’ll explore the ecology, diversity, physiology and other aspects of marine animals and plants in greater depth. Many marine biology students combine their studies with courses in chemistry or physics of the ocean, which are offered through the Department of Oceanography.

Marine biology students are offered a co-op education option. Students who take advantage of the co-op option will be able to complete three work terms in industry, government or university laboratories, or ecotourism.

If you thrive in a smaller campus environment with average class sizes of 20 to 30 people, consider doing the first two years of your degree on our Truro campus. After completing your first two years (and earning an Engineering diploma), you will move to the Halifax campus to complete the final two years of your degree.

MINERAL RESOURCE ENGINEERING
Mineral resource engineers develop economically and environmentally responsible ways of extracting and processing minerals from the Earth. Mineral resource engineers evaluate the economics of mineral deposits; develop plans for surface mines, roadways and tunnels; design underground mine plants and ventilation systems; ensure mine safety and environmental protection; and develop innovative mine technology.

Co-op options
Co-op students take the same academic program as the non co-op program; however, our co-op option gives you an opportunity to complement your studies with three paid work terms.

The Animal Science major is designed to give students the scientific foundation required to understand and work with animals in a variety of contexts. That foundation begins with the first-year courses that form the BSc (Agriculture) core and continues in second, third and fourth year with more specialized courses.

In third or fourth year, Animal Science majors have the opportunity to select and conduct their own research project. Combined with Humanities and Social Science electives, these courses are the basis of a well-rounded education that prepares students for a wide range of careers.

What will I learn?
The Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies is a two-year program entered after completing two years of university studies in another subject. You take courses in design, humanities, technology and professional practice.
You'll work individually and collaboratively on design projects in the studio, learning manual skills in drawing, modeling, and building and then the equivalent digital skills.

The four-month co-op work term is a great way to begin applying new knowledge in a professional architectural practice. Co-op work terms include opportunities across the country and around the world and typically involve various aspects of building design, including design drawing, model-making, computer drafting and construction supervision.  

Materials engineering is indispensible in supplying materials to any industrialized nation. Materials engineers look at how materials are made; how and why certain materials are chosen for the manufacturing of different products like computers or cars; and how materials can be improved. 

Metals and materials are found in every aspect of society today. Materials have always been central to the advancement of civilization so it is not surprising that entire eras are named after them (bronze age, iron age). The importance of developing new, advanced materials is truly a global issue with societal demands for things such as more fuel efficient vehicles and faster computer processors reaching all time highs. Materials Engineers are the driving force behind such developments, having an unsurpassed understanding of the respective structure, properties and processing of materials. Consequently, graduates are employed in practically all industries. Principals amongst these are primary metal production, automotive, aerospace, government research establishments and consulting firms. Literally all graduates find immediate employment - historically, over 70% have secured full time positions before the start of their final academic term. These niche individuals are highly respected within the companies that they work for and many advance into upper managerial and executive positions.

Studying Environment, Sustainability and Society (ESS) at Dalhousie will allow you to explore the links between complex environmental issues and poverty, globalization, consumption and urbanization. You’ll gain skills that will make you a leader and change-maker in your chosen career path.  
What will I learn?
You’ll combine your major in ESS with a second major depending on your undergraduate degree of choice.

Dalhousie’s ESS program has an interdisciplinary approach, allowing you to explore how ESS topics relate to other industries you may be interested in. The core ESS courses will help you analyze and understand a wide range of concepts relating to energy, water, climate change, population and more.

First-year students begin by taking general introduction courses to the concepts of Environment, Sustainability and Society. These courses will give you the background for more in-depth studies in topics such as environmental decision-making and global environmental governance.
