WHY STUDY RECREATION (THERAPEUTIC) AT DAL?

A one-of-a-kind opportunity to improve quality of life
Learn how recreation and leisure experiences can be used to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities, illnesses and other limitations. One of a few four-year degrees of its kind, Dalhousie's Recreation program was the first to be accredited in Canada by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. You'll be prepared to write the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) exam to become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).

What will I learn?
The goal of the program is to provide students with the theoretical and practical skills to work in a variety of settings as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Since we only accept approximately 25 students each year, class sizes are very small and you have the opportunity to work closely with faculty and fellow students.
In first year, along with the introductory leisure studies course, you’ll take a range of introductory courses in other departments, such as physiology, sociology, psychology and anatomy. In years two to four, your courses will reflect your individual interests in the program—anything from leadership and dynamics to community development.

In the final year of the program a 16-week internship, under the supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, takes you out of the classroom and provides you with hands-on work experience that enhances your studies.

This unique program is offered jointly by Dalhousie's School of Health and Human Performance and the Faculty of Management. After five years, you'll graduate with a Bachelor of Science (Recreation) and a Bachelor of Management—with a strong background in both the recreation and management fields. You'll have the business know-how and recreation management skills you'll need to start an exciting career in the growing recreation and leisure service industry. Our alumni and practicing professionals help guide our curriculum, which means you'll receive the skills and knowledge that employers are seeking.

What will I learn?
You'll have a wide variety of courses to choose from as you complete your degrees. In your first year, you'll take a mixture of introductory courses in Management, Economics, Sociology and Social Anthropology, Leisure Studies, and Health and Human Performance.

In subsequent years, the required Leisure Studies and Management courses become more specialized, while opportunities open up for other electives. Your courses will provide you with not only the theories of leisure studies and health promotion, but also the business skills and knowledge needed to effectively manage recreation programs and facilities.

The 14-week internship in the final year of the program takes you out of the classroom and provides you with hands-on work experience to enhance your studies. Please note: students who entered the program in September 2018 and onward will be required to do a 16 week internship.

WHY STUDY VETERINARY TECHNOLOGY AT DAL?
Make a difference in an animal's life
Do you want to become an integral part of a veterinary medical team? The Veterinary Technology program at our Agricultural Campus in Truro, N.S. will get you there. This program is accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association so you’ll be prepared to work as a technician with practicing veterinarians, researchers and other professionals who work with animals in medical or scientific environments.
What will I learn?
In this two-year diploma program, you’ll take a variety of courses in animal medicine and nursing, clinical exercises and pathology, anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology. To reflect the majority of employment opportunities in Atlantic Canada, the program is oriented mainly towards companion animals. However, you'll also learn about large animal practice, lab animals and alternative pet medicine. 

We’ll provide opportunities for you to learn outside the classroom through an off-campus externship at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown, P.E. and in general veterinary practices. You can also work in our on-campus animal clinic, where you’ll learn the skills required to be successful in a companion animal veterinary practice.

Dalhousie University introduced the Master of Engineering (MEng) in Internetworking in 1997. Offered through the Faculties of Engineering and Graduate Studies, it's the world's longest-running graduate program dedicated to Internetworking.

The Bachelor of Commuity Design (BCD) is a three-year program that explores ways in which people can work towards creating and maintaining healthy and sustainable communities. Our BCD Brochure gives you an overview of the degree.

Materials engineering is indispensible in supplying materials to any industrialized nation. Materials engineers look at how materials are made; how and why certain materials are chosen for the manufacturing of different products like computers or cars; and how materials can be improved. 

Metals and materials are found in every aspect of society today. Materials have always been central to the advancement of civilization so it is not surprising that entire eras are named after them (bronze age, iron age). The importance of developing new, advanced materials is truly a global issue with societal demands for things such as more fuel efficient vehicles and faster computer processors reaching all time highs. Materials Engineers are the driving force behind such developments, having an unsurpassed understanding of the respective structure, properties and processing of materials. Consequently, graduates are employed in practically all industries. Principals amongst these are primary metal production, automotive, aerospace, government research establishments and consulting firms. Literally all graduates find immediate employment - historically, over 70% have secured full time positions before the start of their final academic term. NUCLEAR MEDICINE TECHNOLOGY
Who are Nuclear Medicine Technologists?
Nuclear Medicine Technologists are highly skilled health care professionals who use radioactive drugs called radiopharmaceuticals to help diagnose and treat a variety of illnesses. They treat patients of all age groups, from newborns to older adults.

What do Nuclear Medicine Technologists do?
Nuclear Medicine Technologists perform examinations that evaluate how the body functions. There are many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures Nuclear Medicine Technologists are responsible for performing; the most common organs evaluated/treated are:

How do I become a Nuclear Medicine Technologist?
The School of Health Sciences offers a four year Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) degree program, which includes theory and practice. Students will take core professional development courses with a concentration on nuclear medicine specific skills. The program curriculum offers the necessary competencies to challenge the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) professional examination.

Psychology encompasses all aspects of human and animal behaviour. Dalhousie offers the largest Psychology department in the region and you'll have plenty of opportunities to get involved in research. What will I learn?
If you’ve ever wondered why we do the things we do or how people think, behave and interact with others, then you’ve wondered about topics studied in psychology. When you study psychology at Dalhousie, you'll learn about experimental design, statistical analysis, brain function, language development, learning mechanisms, psychopathology and treatment and more.

In your first year of study, you'll take introductory courses in psychology and neuroscience to provide you with a foundation for more in-depth studies in upper years. When you study Plant Science at Dalhousie, you’ll gain a solid understanding of the ideas and methods used in biological, physical and behavioural sciences. You’ll acquire a very sound knowledge of plants, along with practical and life-long learning skills, all while studying at Dalhousie's beautiful Agricultural Campus in Truro, N.S.

What will I learn?
Plant Science will give you the knowledge and skills to research and investigate real-world problems associated with food security, quality and wellness. You’ll also dive into contemporary issues related to environmental integrity, biotechnology, plant breeding, sustainable crop production and more.

You will learn both the theory and practices related to the study of plants and their production. Your studies may lead you to expertise in many sub-disciplines such as fruit, vegetable, ornamental or field crops. You may focus on the genetics or physiology of plants or learn how to manage different types of farming systems.

In your first year of study, you’ll take foundation-building science courses in biology, chemistry, calculus and agricultural ecosystems and microeconomics. In your upper years you’ll study more in-depth subjects such as structural botany, entomology, plant pathology and soil fertility and nutrients. Students can tailor their degree to their personal interests by choosing from numerous electives.  

The program also includes production courses which provide students with opportunities to gain knowledge and skills focused on areas of production such as greenhouse and floriculture, forages and cover crops, organic field crop management plus many others.
