The two-semester General Certificate pathway provides students with a high degree of choice and flexibility. This program is designed for students who are looking to determine their long-term academic or career goals as well as students who have specific academic/career pathways beyond the other General Arts and Science pathways. Students can earn credit towards other Durham College programs. The General Certificate provides opportunities to refine essential academic skills and develop the foundational knowledge needed to help ensure success in subsequent post-secondary studies. This program also allows students to familiarize themselves with post-secondary life, expectations, surroundings, and opportunities.

This joint Durham College (DC) and Ontario Tech University (Ontario Tech) diploma-to-degree program will enable you to earn two credentials in only four years. Experience the best of both learning environments while on the journey to a rewarding career in finance. Build a solid foundation in business as well as training in various areas of financial planning, investments, and life and health insurance, using the latest technology in combination with the most current business and IT trends.

Students will be prepared to write the Canadian Securities Institute (CSI) Global Education Inc. exam, the professional designation of Chartered Financial Analysts, the Canadian Investment Funds Course (CIFC)® exam to be eligible for mutual fund licensing, as well as the Canadian Securities Course (CSC)® exams to be eligible for a securities license. The external industry licencing exams, fees and the requirements for each designation/certification are set by the granting body, not DC or Ontario Tech. In order to qualify for any of these designations/certifications, students need to follow and meet the required processes.

As a graduate of this program, you will apply technical knowledge of safety hazards, health risks and dangers to prevent injuries and illness while supporting broader public safety. Become a highly skilled professional with the expertise to manage the social, health, environmental and legal issues associated with the built and natural environment. With the implementation of new legislated requirements in Canada regarding workplace safety and environmental protection standards, job prospects in this field are continuing to grow. Combine strategic problem solving with strong interpersonal skills as you perform environmental audits, deliver training, implement safety controls, conduct incident investigations, develop controls and contingency planning and prepare technical documentation and records in a quality-controlled environment. You will also be well-positioned to pursue the Certified Health and Safety Consultant designation upon graduation.

As an Environment Health and Safety Management graduate, you will be able to:

• Perform work audits in environmental and occupational health and safety in compliance with legislation to prevent workplace risk exposure.
• Design evidence-based training programs that use industry best practices for evaluating the health and safety of built and natural environments.
• Evaluate technical, environmental and industrial hygiene procedures and systems in their alignment to legislation, regulatory standards and guidelines.
• Conduct material testing in the laboratory and on site using qualitative sampling methods and statistical data analysis to determine contaminants and hazards.
• Propose health and safety recommendations that respond to concerns arising from audit findings, risk and life cycle assessments and the review of report documentation.
• Prepare health and safety technical documentation to record the results of investigations of the built and natural environment.
• Manage project communication with partners to ensure consistency and maintain quality.
• Develop emergency responses to industrial and natural disasters by assessing and minimizing environmental and labour impact.

Used in a wide variety of organizations, accounting involves measuring business activities; processing information into financial reports and statements; and communicating information to the appropriate decision-makers. To meet the wide range of accounting employment opportunities, Durham College incorporates a variety of simulations into the courses to help prepare students for the workplace. In this program, you will develop knowledge of business processes and management tools to develop demand forecasts; evaluate suppliers’ capabilities to ethically source purchased goods and services; use technology, including SAP® and Microsoft Excel/Project; and develop supply chain plans and schedules to efficiently produce goods or services that meet quality expectations and the needs of the global markets. You will also learn industry-standard practices including Six Sigma, Total Quality Management, Just-in-Time, Lean Principles, and Project Management. Led by knowledgeable faculty with strong ties to industry, this program also provides many opportunities for real-world learning experiences through either field placement or co-op work terms. You will also be able to earn industry credentials, including the SAP-UA Student Recognition Award and Microsoft Office Specialist Certification in Excel, to help you stand out to employers in a competitive market.

Supply chain and operations management is the core functional area of any business. Supply chain and operations managers obtain, develop and manage the resources required to deliver goods and services to clients. This includes contributing to key decisions involving:

Graduates are well-positioned to pursue a variety of professional accreditations with professional organizations including:

• Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM) - Certified in Production and Inventory Management
• Supply Chain Management Association (SCMA) - Supply Chain Management Professional (SCMP) designation

After completing one year of business study, you may choose to graduate with a certificate in Business Fundamentals. After two years of study, you may choose to graduate with a diploma in Supply Chain and Operations – Business.

Students will have two options to gain valuable skills in the workforce and will either complete a field placement or a co-operative education (co-op) experience. Students completing the field placement will participate in an unpaid work placement completed during semester 6. Students who qualify for the co-op experience will complete a four-month paid work experience in between second and third year of their program.

Co-operative education (co-op)

The best way to succeed in your field is to immerse yourself in it! Co-op is an excellent way to build your professional network, explore career paths and apply in-class teachings to real work situations. Co-op is a model of education that integrates academic learning with workplace learning in fields relevant to our students’ academic and personal goals. Similar to an academic course, work terms are a mandatory component to this form of experiential learning.

Students in the Business Administration – Supply Chain and Operations Management Advanced Diploma program will be invited to apply to the co-op option during their first year of study. Entrance to the co-op option is limited and the processes for securing a work term are competitive.  Students who qualify for co-op will be eligible to complete a four-month, paid work term between the second and third years of their program. Students interested in co-op may also apply to transfer to the co-op internship option of their program which would extend the work integrated learning opportunity to 4 consecutive work terms.

Supports are available through the Co-op office to assist students with securing their work terms. In addition, the Co-op office is in contact with co-op students and their employers during the work terms to help with any questions. Upon completing the work term, co-op students return to campus to complete their final two academic semesters of the program before graduating.

For students who want the best of both worlds, this joint Durham College and Ontario Tech University diploma-to-degree program will enable you to earn a human resources (HR) diploma and an honours degree in only four years. The opportunity to study in both learning environments provides a solid foundation for a successful career in HR where you will help to develop balanced workplaces so both the business and the employee can achieve their goals. You will acquire skills in the effective use of industry-standard software and learn from professors who are connected to industry. As a student, you will have the opportunity to interact directly with industry professionals and to participate in hands-on learning opportunities such as case competitions.

As the only one of its kind in Ontario, the Law Clerk Advanced program will help you gain experience in both foundational areas of law such as corporate, litigation, family and real estate, as well as specialized areas such as securities, intellectual property, employment and immigration law to prepare you for a rewarding and successful career. Whether you want to be a law clerk in a law office, a corporate legal department or a government agency, you’ll have the skills needed for a successful career.  The demand for graduates has never been greater with over 50% of students routinely securing full-time employment before classes even finish!

Co-operative education (co-op)

Co-op is a model of education that integrates academic learning with workplace learning in fields relevant to our students’ academic and personal goals. Similar to an academic course, work terms are a mandatory component to this form of experiential learning.

Students in the Law Clerk – Advanced Diploma program will be invited to apply to the co-op option during their first academic semester. Entrance to the co-op option is limited and the processes for securing a work term are competitive. Students who qualify for co-op will be eligible to complete two four-month, paid work terms totalling 840 hours. Work terms are scheduled between semesters two and three and four and five of the program.

Supports are available through the Co-op office to assist students with securing their work terms. In addition, the Co-op office is in contact with co-op students and their employers during the work terms to help with any questions.

In this program designed specifically for applicants with existing academic credentials, students with a degree in science can expand their knowledge of the biotechnology industry and complete their Biotechnology advanced diploma in fewer semesters. Biotechnology touches a broad range of industries including health, pharmaceuticals, food production and agriculture. The discipline has created knowledge and products essential to our continued livelihood such as vaccines to prevent disease, pest-resistant plants, environmentally friendly biofuels and improved detection of diseases.

Graduates of the Biotechnology – Advanced program are competitively qualified to work in a range of industries including those focused on food, the environment, pharmaceuticals, natural health products and cannabis. Learning within state-of-the-art labs using industry-grade equipment, students learn how living organisms or parts of living organisms can provide new methods of production and development of new products in a range of industries as well as the regulations which govern the use of these techniques. Our courses are rooted in real-world applications and our extensive analytical instrumentation lab provides practical, hands-on training. Students graduate with a strong base of theoretical knowledge and practical skills to draw from in their future careers.

This program will provide you with the ability and confidence to seek opportunities and provide support within the dynamic world of engineering, including the automotive, energy generation, construction and manufacturing sectors. Your future role may steer you towards a career in industrial design, metal and non-metal fabrication including machining or technical support. Students train and explore in our premier advanced automation facility through an experiential learning path that engages them with real-world controllers, operator touch screens, industrial networks, robotics and more.

This program will appeal to you if you prefer hands-on experience and like technology. You will learn to create computer-aided drawing (CAD) models of machine parts and assemblies, program computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software and manufacture designs using computer numerical control (CNC) code. The program is taught in up to date laboratories, utilizing the latest design software and manufacturing and testing equipment.
