Are you interested in understanding the universe and our place in it? Consider studying astrophysics at Western! Through the interaction of light and matter, you can access the universe through observatories around the world and in space. Astrophysicists at Western will help you explore black holes, exoplanets, meteors, the atmospheres of Earth and other planets, the dust and gas between the stars, and the evolution of galaxies over cosmic time. With the skills acquired in this module, our graduates stand out with their involvement in cutting-edge research, including the recent discovery of gravitational waves and new planets beyond our solar system.

By studying German at Western, you can gain a solid foundation in the language of Europe’s most influential economy and explore the language and culture in which figures such as Bach, Goethe, Mozart, Nietzsche, Brecht, Kafka, and Benjamin lived and worked and in which recent Nobel Prize winners, Elfriede Jelinek and Herta Müller, are thriving. Investigate and analyze culture through upper year seminars about German literary, visual and performing arts, covering periods from the medieval, classicist, romantic agesto the contemporary culture of unification and integration or about cities such as Vienna and Berlin. Major, Minor or Certificate module options are available and final-year capstone experiences include research seminars or project courses, and completion of an undergraduate honors thesis.

Student learn the German language through a multi-media, communicative approach, that focuses on the cultures of all German-speaking countries and integrates authentic materials such as articles, websites, film and literature. Challenge yourself with study abroad or exchange opportunities and receive credit at Western or engage with hands-on intercultural experience through in-class and community service learning.

Whether taking a medication to treat a disease, driving a car, or playing on our smartphones, chemistry has an immense impact on all aspects of our daily lives. Chemistry, also known as the central science, is the study of materials at the atomic and molecular level, and in particular, their properties, composition, and reactions. Since all materials are composed of atoms and molecules, a thorough understanding of chemistry is crucial to the understanding of all other physical and biological sciences, ranging from astronomy to medicine, to zoology. Phenomena such as global warming, the health effects of trans fats, and the efficiency of hybrid vehicles, can all be explained by chemical principles. Accordingly, chemists contribute substantially to the discovery and development of new technologies, be they environmental, medical, or transportation, to name a few.

Computer science drives innovation in the 21st Century. From influencing the space program and contributing to models of personalized medicine, to solving life and business challenges through big data applications, computer science is all about exploring possibilities and influencing outcomes. The Department of Computer Science at Western is responsive to rapidly changing business, social and natural landscapes. Experience the Middle Ages in all its glory through an exciting, Faculty-wide program led by over twenty of Western’s world-renowned medieval experts. Beginning with the foundation course, Medieval Studies 1020, you will then create your own roadmap through this fascinating period in history, resulting in a Minor or Major in Medieval Studies. With opportunities to study Latin at Poitiers or experience an archaeological dig in Europe or the Middle East, medieval studies will truly come to life!

This degree program is designed for students interested in advanced study in the basic medical sciences and focuses on all aspects of biology that define and influence the human condition. Emphasis is placed on understanding the normal human condition, mechanisms of current treatment and the search for cures.

There are hundreds of millions of French speakers worldwide, including over 7 million Canadian Francophones, and a module in French Studies can give you a significant advantage when considering work opportunities. Whether it be in educational, business, diplomatic, legal or scientific professions, French provides you with an additional asset for today’s highly competitive job market. You may pursue an Honors Specialization or a Major in French Studies with the intention of working where French is required, or choose a Minor in French Studies or one of our Certificates in combination with another degree program in order to be more competitive in today’s globalized job market. Whatever you choose to do in life, a module in French Studies always enhances your career prospects.0

The first year for all Bachelor of Music students includes courses in Music Theory, Music History, Music Skills (Sight-singing, Ear-training, and Keyboard Harmony), a half-course in music composition, teaching & learning, or popular music & culture, a half-course music or non-music elective and a half-course elective from outside the Don Wright Faculty of Music. Bachelor of Music students also receive weekly hour-long lessons plus regular masterclasses and ensemble experience.

In the Bachelor of Music (Honours) programs, a specific area of study is normally selected towards the end of the first year, when the student has had the opportunity to assess particular strengths and interests. It is also possible to continue in a general Bachelor of Music program without selecting a specific concentration.
