Our department’s expertise encapsulates a wide array of interdisciplinary strengths across feminist theory and various feminist approaches to health studies, media studies, history, globalization and development studies, philosophy, law, writing studies and literature, and visual culture, as well as significant work in queer theory and sexuality studies. We are one of only a few units across the University recognized as a Department in both the Faculty of Social Science and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Further, we have a rich network of Affiliate faculty members appointed in many other departments across Western who are integral members of our learning community. We also promote feminist scholarship through provision for resident scholars, a Distinguished Speakers Series, faculty colloquia, annual conferences (including a graduate conference, and Flaunting It!, our annual undergraduate conference on gender and sexuality).

From the smallest microchip to the largest power station, Electrical engineers harness electrical energy for human benefit. As a Western Electrical engineering student, you will embrace the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism. Your knowledge will be applied to electronics, digital computers, robotics, power engineering, telecommunications, control systems, and signal processing. Electrical engineering will prepare you to tackle the world’s power and energy challenges.

Instead of specializing, Integrated engineers work across fields realizing opportunities and implementing practical solutions. In the Integrated engineering program, you will have a broad foundation in engineering fundamentals and problem-solving approaches across different engineering disciplines and develop skills to navigate and manage the interaction between engineering and business. Your knowledge and skills will be suited to participate on and lead interdisciplinary engineering and business teams to seek innovative solutions to significant challenges, including: climate change, renewable energy, environmentally friendly buildings, food and water security, autonomous transportation systems, and much more.

Civil engineers build and improve communities by providing essential infrastructure, solving environmental problems caused by industrialization and resource consumption, and by mitigating natural disasters. Learning in state-of-the-art Civil engineering facilities, you will take classes such as structural analysis, wind engineering, geotechnical design, international development and environmental engineering. This program prepares you to design and construct challenging structures, improve the environment and quality of life for the future and have a global perspective on development and sustainability

Epidemiology and Biostatistics trains students to understand why some people get sick and others do not, why rates of disease vary by person, place and time and to learn how to investigate disease causation, prevention and intervention. Develop skills to contribute to health policy by providing data relevant to health promotion and illness-prevention programs. Study areas concerned with the determinants and distribution of diseases in human populations while discovering new statistical methods for collecting, analyzing and interpreting data.

Geography and Environment at Western centres around the following sub-disciplines; Physical Geography, Geographic Information Science (GIS), Urban Studies and Environment, Development and Health. This broad, integrative perspective makes Western geographers employable in a wide range of occupations.

Indigenous Studies is an interdisciplinary program examining topics relevant to Indigenous peoples' realities. The program allows students to either specifically focus on Indigenous issues or to combine their program with other undergraduate programs. Students may select modules after completing their first year of study. You can mix and match modules from Indigenous Studies with modules from other programs. This modular structure allows students to combine courses from various departments and faculties that match their academic goals and interests and also provides them the opportunity to achieve a broader knowledge base. The module selection is completed under the guidelines of the three year or four year degree that the student is enroled in.

For a Major in Indigenous Studies, after having completed all first-year requirements with at least 3.0 principal courses and the successful completion of IS 1020E with a minimum grade of 60%, you may proceed to enrol in courses for the Indigenous Studies Major module. Software engineering is a systematic and disciplined approach to the design and development of software. It applies technical computer science skills and engineering principles to the creation, operation, and maintenance of software systems. In Western’s Software engineering program, you will experience a real world education approach to allow you to specify, design, implement, and maintain innovative software systems. You will engage in experiential learning opportunities and project-based courses, building software systems, ranging from apps for mobile devices to systems used by world-wide organizations.

The Major in Kinesiology provides flexibility in selecting Kinesiology courses allowing students to initially investigate courses throughout the broad scope of Kinesiology. With fewer Kinesiology course requirements than other modules students enroled in the major have the flexibility to incorporate more external electives within their degree. Students often combine a major in Kinesiology with a major from another discipline.

Western's School of Kinesiology offers undergraduate and graduate programs that allow students to explore the bioscientific and sociocultural aspects of human movement. Flexible program options at both the undergraduate and graduate levels allow students to tailor their program of study to achieve specific learning goals while learning from researchers and teachers who are experts in their fields.
