Health Promotion, which can be described as 'making the healthier choice the easier choice', is a multi-dimensional field of study that helps students acquire health-related knowledge in both the social sciences and life sciences. Students interested in careers in health program development, community health, and public health education should explore the Honors Specialization Health Promotion.

Civil engineers build and improve communities by providing essential infrastructure, solving environmental problems caused by industrialization and resource consumption, and by mitigating natural disasters. Learning in state-of-the-art Civil engineering facilities, you will take classes such as structural analysis, wind engineering, geotechnical design, international development and environmental engineering. This program prepares you to design and construct challenging structures, improve the environment and quality of life for the future and have a global perspective on development and sustainability

Mechanical engineers use fundamental engineering concepts and contemporary design practices to develop new devices, materials, processes and systems. As a Western Mechanical engineering student, you will apply the principles of physics and materials science for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems, automotive and aerospace systems, and robotics. Working closely with faculty supervisors, in your fourth year you will complete a major Mechanical Engineering Design Project developing skills to become a dynamic and capable engineering professional.

You may pursue an Honors Specialization or a Major in French Studies with the intention of working where French is required, or choose a Minor in French Studies or one of our Certificates in combination with another degree program in order to be more competitive in today’s globalized job market. Anthropology is the study of humans in all our social, cultural, linguistic, and biological diversity and complexity.  The four subfields of Anthropology (Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology, and Sociocultural Anthropology) are united by shared perspectives on how we study the full breadth of humanity. 

Biology can be studied at the level of molecules, cells, organisms and populations. Selecting a Biology module affords you the opportunity to study at all of these different scales or to focus in upper year courses on only one or two. Another reason the Biology modules are a popular choice is it allows you to study a wide range of organisms from microbes to humans. Students interested in the area of ecology will find that the Biology modules will allow them to take a wide range of engaging courses covering aspects of community, population, molecular and chemical ecology. Similarly, students interested in evolutionary biology can be engaged by courses on more quantitative aspects of evolution to evolutionary genetics. Both plant and animal physiology courses are also popular choices of students in these modules built on a strong cohort of research faculty in these areas.

Experience the Middle Ages in all its glory through an exciting, Faculty-wide program led by over twenty of Western’s world-renowned medieval experts. Beginning with the foundation course, Medieval Studies 1020, you will then create your own roadmap through this fascinating period in history, resulting in a Minor or Major in Medieval Studies. With opportunities to study Latin at Poitiers or experience an archaeological dig in Europe or the Middle East, medieval studies will truly come to life!

Geography and Environment at Western centres around the following sub-disciplines; Physical Geography, Geographic Information Science (GIS), Urban Studies and Environment, Development and Health. This broad, integrative perspective makes Western geographers employable in a wide range of occupations.

Students in Film Studies delve into the aesthetics, history, philosophy and the technology of film making through practical historical and theoretical courses. Film is considered from several viewpoints; including political, sociological, historical, and cultural ones – all enabling students to understand, analyze, discuss and explain film in its many forms. Shaped by contemporary, interdisciplinary scholarship, students will critically engage in the art of cinema and explore the global and historical conditions that have made it one of the most influential forms of visual culture.

Indigenous Studies is an interdisciplinary program examining topics relevant to Indigenous peoples' realities. The program allows students to either specifically focus on Indigenous issues or to combine their program with other undergraduate programs. Students may select modules after completing their first year of study. You can mix and match modules from Indigenous Studies with modules from other programs. This modular structure allows students to combine courses from various departments and faculties that match their academic goals and interests and also provides them the opportunity to achieve a broader knowledge base. The module selection is completed under the guidelines of the three year or four year degree that the student is enroled in.

For a Major in Indigenous Studies, after having completed all first-year requirements with at least 3.0 principal courses and the successful completion of IS 1020E with a minimum grade of 60%, you may proceed to enrol in courses for the Indigenous Studies Major module.
