Overview

The Developmental Services Worker two-year diploma program prepares its graduates to support people with developmental disabilities so that these individuals may participate fully in their communities. DSW have the specialized knowledge and skills required to work with people with developmental disabilities across the life span.

Inherent to the role of a DSW is an ability to collaborate and build relationships with people with developmental disabilities and their families and to work with colleagues and members of inter-professional teams to facilitate a seamless network of support for people.

Courses focus on disabilities, person directed supports, inclusion and community resources, dual diagnosis, interpersonal skills, counselling, health, pharmacology, development, teaching and intervention strategies. Field placements in community agencies and/or schools are part of the curriculum.

The Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resources Management) program is a four-year, honours level degree with a mandatory co-op work term between Levels 7 and 8.  Students will study core fundamentals of business including business strategy, management, accounting, leadership and marketing in addition to the specialized human resources management courses, including performance management, human resources planning, talent acquisition, employee and labour relations and compensation and benefits administration. All nine CHRP course credits required for professional licensing bodies are included in this program.

Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant is a two-year Ontario College Diploma program.  The program prepares students to work under the direction of Occupational Therapists and/or Physiotherapists to support the therapeutic assessment, treatment and care of clients.  Curriculum delivered through both web-facilitated classroom and laboratory instruction includes the role of the OTA/PTA in relation to clients musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, and neurological functions and conditions.  Students engage in three clinical placement opportunities throughout the program, including at least one placement each in an Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy setting.

The Computer Systems Technology program is an accredited, three-year co-operative education, Ontario College Advanced Diploma program which provides comprehensive training for students wishing to work in the high demand areas of network, security, virtualization, data storage and management and systems operation and management.  This program provides the students the ability to be effective team leaders, think critically, solve problems and acquire new skills quickly.

Under the guidance of expert faculty, combined with the use of leading edge labs, the program emphasizes the design, implementation, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, management, as well as the hands-on installation of networking, security, VoIP, mobile devices, virtualization, data storage and management, server, workstation and operating systems technologies.

Instruction in project management, communication and interpersonal skills prepare the student to effectively interact with all levels of users in both oral and written mediums.

Upon completion of the program, and in addition to the highly valued Ontario College Advanced Diploma, graduates should have the knowledge and skills to take exams for the following certifications, if they choose to do so: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP). Human Resources Management is a one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program, completed in two four-month levels (laptop required).  Designed for university or college graduates, this program provides graduates with functional knowledge in core areas of human resources: recruitment and selection, training and development, human resources planning, occupational health and safety, organizational behaviour, finance and accounting, human resources management, compensation and benefits and labour relations.  Students have the opportunity to complete all nine Certified Human Resources Professional/Leader (CHRP/ CHRL) credits.  (Refer to the Human Resources Professionals Association website for more information: www.hrpa.ca.)
