Fanshawe College's Law Clerk program is designed to provide students with a solid grounding in legal principles combined with the practical law clerk training that students will need to enter the diverse, fast-paced, modern field of law. As a graduate of the Law Clerk program you will work as part of a team in law firms, corporate legal departments, financial institutions, insurance companies, legal technology providers, title insurance companies, Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments or in any other capacity where a legal environment exists. The program provides the technical knowledge and skills required to manage the construction of industrial, commercial, and institutional buildings from the planning stage through to completion. Studies include construction materials and methods, construction equipment, surveying, project management, scheduling, estimating, building economics, and construction contracts. Twelve months of co-operative work experience is an integral part of the program.

Co-operative Education

This program emphasizes the dynamic role of the Doula within communities to prepare graduates for a rewarding career collaborating with health care teams to honour and advocate for expectant families throughout the full spectrum of their reproductive journey. The curriculum captures the specialized evidence-informed knowledge, skills, and experience relating to anatomy, physiology, and the emotional, physical, and cultural aspects of pregnancy and birth required by Doulas to provide families with information and support during pregnancy, childbirth, newborn care, and including loss. In addition, students are introduced to business management/entrepreneurship concepts and strategies, including business ethics, contracts, marketing and sales techniques, and personal financial management.

Advanced Diploma in Fire Inspection and Fire Safety Education

The Fire Inspection and Fire Safety Education program is an Ontario College Advanced Diploma that prepares graduates to enter the fire service in the field of fire prevention.

The program provides a foundation in fire science and fire mathematics. It also provides comprehensive coverage of relevant codes and legislation (e.g., Ontario Fire Code and the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, the Ontario Building Code and the Building Code Act).

The core vocational curriculum is aligned with several professional credentials offered by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA): Fire Inspector I and II, Fire and Life Safety Educator I and II, and Public Information Officer. Students will also graduate with the communication skills and interpersonal skills they need to function as leaders in the fire service and in the community.  

Learning Outcomes:

  • Conduct field inspections of new or existing single- and multi-use structures to determine code compliance and to evaluate fire protection systems and equipment (e.g., occupancy classification and occupant loads; hazardous conditions involving equipment, processes and operations; emergency planning and preparedness procedures; storage, handling and use of hazardous materials, and flammable and combustible liquids and gases; egress and emergency access; fire flows and fire growth potential).

  • Identify the applicable code or standard in response to a fire protection, fire prevention or life safety issue, including those identified in plan review, and recommend modifications to address the problem, need or deficiency in an inspection report or inspection order.
  • Participate in legal proceedings, in consultation with legal counsel, regarding the findings of a field inspection, plan review or complaint.
  • Review building plans for compliance with applicable codes and standards for fire and life safety (e.g., occupancy classification, occupant load, construction type, construction features, fire protection systems), and verify newly constructed buildings against an approved set of plans and building features

Business - Marketing is a two-year Ontario College Diploma program. This program provides students with a strong foundation to gain entry to a variety of marketing career paths. Courses cover topics such as customer analysis, segmentation, and targeting; integrated marketing communications; pricing and distribution strategies; and product and service development and management. Hands-on activities include market research studies, advertising campaigns, sales and business plans - many of these activities involving live clients from industry. Students learn to use current software programs, including presentation, spreadsheet, graphic design and publishing applications. Graduates receive full credit toward a credential with the Canadian Institute of Marketing and earn credits towards the Certified Sales Professional designation offered by the Canadian Professional Sales Association.
