Diploma in Horticulture Technician (Co-Op Optional)

The Horticulture Technician Diploma is a two-year co-op program with the emphasis on the practical aspects of horticulture. The program develops the academic and practical skill level in students that allow them to easily match a growing need in the green profession. All graduates can be fully employed in the field; there are, according to Landscape Ontario, the provincial trade organization, over 1600 positions available in horticulture in the province annually. Additionally, many opportunities exist out-of-province and even out-of-country.

The first year of the Horticulture Technician program is academic-centred while the emphasis in the second year is on hands-on practical training. Approximately 80% of the scheduled class time in the senior year is spent outside the classroom in courses such as Landscape Field Construction, Greenhouse Plant Production, Arboriculture and Garden and Landscape Maintenance.

Students and faculty participate in practical lab sessions while maintaining and redeveloping the grounds of the campus in real-time situations.  The A.M. (Mac) Cuddy Gardens, in near-by Strathroy, greatly enhances the practical experience in a world-class estate garden which houses a remarkable collection of rare and endangered plants.

Students graduate with an Ontario College Diploma (Co-operative Education Endorsed) and while in the program students are given the opportunity to complete optional training in chainsaw use and the provincial pesticide license. Fanshawe College is the first institution in North America to integrate the CLT (Certified Landscape Technician) a national standard of proficiency into the program. Students will complete practical and written tests during their senior year and if successful will also be able to add the CLT designation to their names.

All students, upon registration, become members of the Student Chapter of Landscape Ontario, the largest student driven chapter in the province.

Students participate in a number of professional opportunities at various shows throughout the year.  In past years Fanshawe has won many medals both provincially and nationally in the Landscape Gardening Skills Competition. Students participate regularly in Landscape Congress in Toronto, building the entrance garden in their final term. Senior students also volunteer in building gardens and assisting with the maintenance of gardens at Canada Blooms in Toronto. The Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington has signed a memorandum of understanding with Fanshawe College and, as a result, student experience is greatly enhanced through this partnership which includes both summer internships and programmed events at the gardens.

The College has active industry partnerships in areas such as: lawn and garden equipment and suppliers, greenhouse service suppliers, landscape suppliers and services as well as professional associations such as the Landscape Ontario, Canadian Nursery Landscape Association, Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Royal Horticultural Society, Scottish Rock Garden Society, the North American Rock Garden Society, the Hardy Plant Society, the American Public Gardens Association and the Ontario Rock Garden Association.

Industry support and corporate sponsorship allows the program to use the latest technology, tools and equipment in the teaching labs; annually over $100,000.00 of support is received from industry.

The Gardens of Fanshawe College and the A.M. (Mac) Cuddy Gardens are recognized as a botanical garden by Botanic Gardens Conservation International and are home to over one million plants of some 4,000 species. Most of the collections are labeled and are propagated in our greenhouse at Fanshawe College and our nursery site in the A.M. (Mac) Cuddy Gardens in Strathroy. Ten students in the program maintain the gardens during summer under the supervision of our two staff horticulturists. Students will spend both class and independent practical periods at both locations. Our annual open garden and plant sale in June at the A.M. (Mac) Cuddy Gardens draws over one thousand visitors.

Co-operative Education:

The Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) program is a four-year, honours level degree with a mandatory co-op work term between Levels 7 and 8. Students will study many aspects of accounting including financial accounting, cost accounting, management accounting, business finance, auditing and taxation in addition to a variety of general business management concepts including business strategy, marketing and human resources. The program will satisfy the degree requirements for all accounting professional bodies and will be closely aligned with the requirements for the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (CPA). Business - Marketing is a two-year Ontario College Diploma program. This program provides students with a strong foundation to gain entry to a variety of marketing career paths. This multidisciplinary program shall expose students to aspects of electromechanical systems. Traditionally, similar programs of study have been found in the electrical/electronic disciplines. Graduates from these programs will also gain knowledge of the mechanical aspects of a system, such as the ability to read mechanical prints, understand tolerances, as well as understand the mechanical nuances of a system.

This program will expose students to both electrical and mechanical principles, allowing graduates from the program to be capable of analyzing, modifying, maintaining and repairing electromechanical systems. As such, the focus of the program shall be concurrent engineering with respect to products and processes. Students shall also be exposed to project management and quality systems. The program will culminate in a 15-week capstone project course where students shall be able to apply their knowledge and document it according to current industry practice.

Co-operative Education
In order to be eligible for co-op, students must maintain a 2.0 GPA and be academically complete at the commencement of their co-op work term.
This is a two-year Co-operative Education program delivered over three years due to the co-op pattern. Students who fulfill both the academic and co-op requirements of the program will be eligible to graduate with a Co-op Endorsed Diploma. When the student graduates they will have the knowledge and necessary skills to work with children, families and community in the context of early learning and development programs for children from birth to age twelve. The student will be prepared to work in a variety of settings, including child care centres, early learning and family centres, Best Start programs, before and after school programs and with school boards.

Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Create learning contexts to enable, build and maintain caring, responsive relationships in partnerships with children, families and communities that value and respect social, cultural and linguistic diversity including Indigenous peoples’ worldviews and Francophone identity;
  • Co-create, facilitate and reflect upon inquiry and play-based early years and child care programs and pedagogical approaches to support children’s learning, holistic development and well-being following children’s capabilities, interests, ideas and experiences;
  • Co-design and maintain inclusive early learning environments to value and support equitable, accessible and meaningful learning opportunities for all children, their families and communities in a range of early years and child care settings;
  • Collaborate with children, families, colleagues, agencies and community partners to create, maintain, evaluate and promote safe and healthy early learning environments to support independence, reasonable risk-taking and healthy development and well-being;
  • Use observation strategies to identify children’s strengths and challenges and to ascertain when children and families might benefit from additional support or community resources;
  • Use professional communication in interactions with children, families, colleagues, employers, the regulatory body, government authorities and children’s service agencies to meet legal and ethical standards of the early years sector;
  • Act in accordance with relevant legislation, regulations, College of Early Childhood Educators Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, agency policies and procedures and principles of evidence-informed practice and reflect upon their impact on one’s own role in early years and child care settings;
  • Identify, report and document when a child is in a situation of perceived risk for, or actual neglect or abuse, in accordance with legislation, the College of Early Childhood Educators Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, policies and procedures;
  • Create and engage in partnerships with families, communities, colleagues, interdisciplinary professionals, authorities and child service agencies to advocate for quality early years and child care programs and services;
  • Engage in reflective practice and continuous professional learning in accordance with principles of lifelong learning, evidence-informed practices in the early years sector and requirements of the College of Early Childhood Educators.
