Museum Management and Curatorship is an intensive, fast-paced, immersion experience that provides applied training for careers in the museum, gallery or heritage sectors. Approximately 75% of classes are held at the Peterborough Museum & Archives.

WORK EXPERIENCE
By the nature of this program, a significant amount of time is spent working in teams in the field, and on practical projects.
The third and final semester of the Museum Management and Curatorship program is a challenging, full-time, four-month internship during the spring and summer. This unpaid, curriculum-based internship will give you hands-on work experience where you will put all your hard work and studies into motion. Students should be prepared to relocate for the internship, to pay full tuition, and be self-supporting. You will negotiate your own internship with faculty assistance. Some students have gone abroad for the internship, for example, to Australia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. The Biotechnology - Advanced program prepares students to analyze forensic, DNA and other medical applications data in automated lab environments.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
With a career in the field of biotechnology with an emphasis in forensics, you have diverse employment opportunities, from working in biological research to quality assurance, to medical or health-related fields, tracking down criminals or identifying victims of crime. Laboratory related occupations are among the fastest growing occupations in the economy. With specialization in forensics and biotechnology, this program is unique and its graduates are in demand in this emerging field. This advanced diploma program would traditionally take six semesters to complete. However, the program has been designed in an accelerated, compressed format, to provide six semesters of course work over five semesters.

In their final, fifth semester, students can complete their full-time internship from April to August - giving graduates the advantage of getting out into the workforce faster. (Should they so choose, students may defer the summer internship until the fall.) Courses in the program integrate theory and practice opportunities in labs and practice settings. Graduates will be critical thinkers with problem-solving abilities, strong interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills and a solid foundation in forensic/DNA/medical applications.

WORK EXPERIENCE
A 15-week internship will immerse students in the work culture of a lab environment, give them the opportunity to seek experience in an area of specialization, and promote networking and awareness of the industry and job potential. Students will work with their faculty in selecting a placement that will be right for them.

Train to be a key member of the multi-disciplinary team providing community pharmaceutical services. The pharmacy personnel landscape is evolving and Community Pharmacy Assistants are in high demand. Work alongside pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in community, medical clinic pharmacies or long-term care pharmacy settings.

Innovative Curriculum - Mental Health Strategies In Policing
Fleming College is leading the way in providing specialized training to respond to increasing numbers of mental health calls-for-service. Recent inquests have highlighted that these calls can be fatal, and often the individual officer’s level of training factors into successfully resolving the situation. Officer duties frequently involve incidents that result in mental health issues for the officer, commonly PTSD. The new Mental Health Strategies In Policing curriculum also examines the relationship between mental health and the student, as both a member of the community and as a candidate for policing.

Field Placement:
Our placement experience really does set Fleming apart from other police programs at the college level. With our close associations and partnerships with a number of police services, you will have an opportunity to take advantage of a wide variety of placements and practicum experiences. NOTE: Placement experience will be subject to a clearance check by the police service. Field placement may extend beyond the 15-week block in semester four, depending on the experience you choose and the preference of the police service placement.

Students who meet specified standards are eligible to participate in one of our two field placement programs, which generally consists of 100 hours working directly with officers at a police service. Students assist officers with community policing initiatives and participate in ride-a-longs with uniformed officers on general patrol.

Communication Skills
Our program emphasizes the most important skill a police officer can possess; the ability to communicate. The capacity to show assertiveness, diffuse conflict, display empathy and establish rapport and trust are hallmarks of any good police officer. This skill set is not only important in policing, but transferable to nearly any career that involves community interaction. To facilitate learning, course curriculum emphasizes scenario and problem- based instruction.

Instructors
Faculty has extensive policing experience with several different police agencies within the Province of Ontario. They are knowledgeable in a range of policing issues including recruiting, investigations, federal and provincial law, officer safety, fitness and communications. “Core” police courses such as Criminal Code, Interview and Investigation and Police Powers are taught by former or current police officers.

The Tourism-Global Travel program combines practical hands-on experiences with class lectures. Students learn the key elements of the travel business through courses such as: Discovering Destinations, Customer Service Management, Tour Operations, Tourism Trends, Marketing, Travel Reservations, Digital Media, Adventure & Ecotourism and Hospitality Sales & Service, plus electives in business and general education courses. Positioned at the convergence of science and art, the Environmental Visual Communication program is designed to fill a recognized need for individuals who are passionate about environmental issues and storytelling and who want to effectively engage people to foster change.

With a focus on strategic messaging and technical savvy, you will learn to use photography, videography, multimedia and design principles to bridge environmental competencies with thoughtful communication through diverse media channels. The program takes place in a truly unique learning environment - at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in downtown Toronto.

Throughout the Environmental Visual Communication (EVC) program, you will learn how to identify strategies to inform and educate, garner engagement and support, and build and share campaigns to address conservation issues.
