The fundamental role of the conservation professional is to preserve and conserve, as appropriate, cultural property for present and future generations. We have a lot to learn from the experiences and events of people who have gone before us. However, we can't learn much from the past if we don't have records of it. Imagine how much history is lost to us when an ancient artifact is destroyed by perfectly well-meaning people who want to save it.

This two-year Ontario College graduate certificate is an intensive, fast-paced learning experience that you will undertake in four consecutive semesters. You'll start your classes in September and spend your first three semesters, during the fall, winter and summer, at the college. Following your introduction to the field of conservation, you will gain valuable, applied and skills-based experience in the care and handling of most common museum materials, including ceramics, glass, stone, metals, wooden objects, leather and proteinaceous materials, textiles, works of art on paper, books, archival materials, photographs and modern materials. Updated curriculum reflects a focus on hands-on skills, experienced based learning, practical applications, beyond best practices and professional standards rooted in ethical applications. Once you've learned the theory and practical skills, you'll treat museum artifacts from local, regional, and national sites. Complementary courses, workshops, assignments, and community-based projects will offer off campus opportunities to practice conservation methods. A full-time, unpaid, curriculum-based internship in your final semester (September to December) provides an invaluable learning and work experience.

Work Experience
There are many opportunities to get practical experience both at the college and off-campus. In your fourth semester, you will take on a challenging, full-time, unpaid curriculum-based internship at an approved site. Students should be prepared to relocate for the internship, to pay full tuition fees, and be self-supporting during this semester. You will negotiate your own internship with faculty assistance and some students have participated in internships abroad. The internship is an unpaid study experience.Students are responsible for negotiating additional paperwork and funding requirements for international internships including visas, travel and insurance. Social Service Workers build and maintain relationships with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities; recognize and respond to individual, group, organizational and community injustices and inequalities; and provide direct services and/or a bridging to resources to improve the quality of peoples’ lives at the personal, cultural, and system levels. Social Service Workers provide these services in a range of residential and community settings while working with other professionals such as child and youth workers, addiction counsellors, teachers, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, and doctors.

The program is four semesters in length with classroom-based courses in the first three semesters and a block placement in the final semester. Applied learning activities are infused into our classroom-based courses such as:

• Practicing interviewing and group facilitation skills for the purposes of engagement, assessment, goal planning and social support with individuals, groups, organizations, and communities;
• Working in teams to plan on and off-campus events, fundraising campaigns, educational awareness days, and promotion of social change;
• Conducting research to challenge forms of oppression as well as to design/develop/improve social service programs; and
• Participating in self-care strategies for personal and professional well-being.

Building on the above knowledge and skills gained, a full-time placement in the fourth and final semester of the program provides a range of practice opportunities in a work setting (agency and location to be determined in consultation with the student, faculty, and available agency sites).

• Winter intake, first semester students take second semester in the spring, third semester in the fall, and fourth semester in the winter. • Individuals receiving funding that is dependent on attending classes continuously without semester breaks would start in the Winter or Spring semesters.

WORK EXPERIENCE
The fourth and final semester integrates learning in the form of a full-time placement and takes place in a work setting matching your learning needs and choice of location with consultation between the student, faculty, and available agency sites. Please be aware that 30 hours of volunteer service within an agency is required between entry into the SSW program and prior to entry into the fourth semester for placement and students must have successfully completed all first, second, and third semester courses prior to entry into fourth semester.

Specific agencies may have requirements such as proof of a current Emergency First Aid certification, CPR certification (Level C), a university degree, or additional immunizations. Also, some agencies may have required in-service training that the student must take prior to placement.

Fleming College's Paralegal program is specifically designed to prepare you, as a graduate, to meet Ontario’s paralegal licensing standards. The program is accredited by the Law Society of Ontario.

Program Highlights
The Fleming Paralegal diploma is accredited with the Law Society of Ontario (LSO ). The LSO is the governing body for paralegals. Fleming program courses meet all competency requirements and prepare you to write the licensing exam and become a member of the LSO. As a licensed paralegal in Ontario you can commission documents and represent clients dealing with lawsuits falling within the jurisdiction of Small Claims Court. You can act for people facing summary conviction charges under municipal by-laws, provincial statutes or the Criminal Code. Some serve as by-law enforcement personnel, or act in a prosecutorial capacity for municipal governments. Paralegals are also trained to assist clients through the potentially complex proceedings of tribunals such as the Landlord and Tenant Board, the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, or the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal. Some paralegals choose to work under the supervision of lawyers or other paralegals, while others offer their services directly to the public.

Work Experience
Your four-month placement offers you an intensive, challenging opportunity to put your skills into practice. You choose the location and setting, your instructors will encourage you as you find and negotiate your placement. You can do your placement locally, provincially, across Canada or in an international setting.

You'll work with community-based agencies (of your choice) on real -- not simulated -- recreation/leisure projects. This will be valuable learning for later, when you're looking for a job. Your placement could be working with youth at risk, with seniors, in outdoor education programs, fitness organizations/centres, children's programs, schools, resorts or municipal settings. There are few limitations as to where you can do your placement. For example, Fleming has a unique partnership with the Resort, Recreation and Tourism Management Student Internship Program in the United States that students can take advantage of. You can work as an activity coordinator at a resort or prepare for a career on a cruise ship.

For your placement, field agencies may require you to submit a current police records check, which is available from your local police department upon payment of a fee. In addition, you may also be required to provide a current Standard First Aid Certificate, and a current Basic CPR Certificate (level C).

This pathway program is designed to prepare you for admission to college programs in health sciences, biological or chemical sciences, while you learn about possible careers in these fields. The program provides the knowledge and skills in communication, mathematics, human anatomy, biology and chemistry needed to be successful in related college programs. Upon successful completion of this two-semester program, you will be eligible for admission to college programs such as:

For consideration in this category, graduates must have achieved an average of 70% or higher over the duration of the Pre-Health Sciences Pathway program. If there are more applications from graduates with 70% or higher than reserved seats available, a selection process based on an average of overall marks will take place.

Throughout the Pre-Health Sciences program, you will learn in a supportive environment and gain hands-on experience in our chemistry and biology labs. Our health curriculum is integrated, and you will also take college-level courses to help you become a competent communicator and problem solver, with the critical analytical, creative and logical thinking skills needed in the workplace. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) uses its front line law enforcement employees, Border Services Officers (BSOs), to fulfill its roles and responsibilities. The BSOs are trained to function as both a Customs and an Immigration official, depending upon the needs of the port of entry where they are employed. As Canada’s first line of defence, they are also trained and equipped to protect themselves and to ensure our overall safety and well-being.

The Customs Border Services program provides experiential, hands-on learning with real life enforcement tools such as a baggage x-ray machine, travellers’ baggage and a practice automobile, to help prepare you for common enforcement-related activities in the field with the CBSA. This training is also beneficial for the non-enforcement jobs found in the brokerage, consulting, transportation and private (import/export) industries. Throughout this program you will:

Program Highlights
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a two-semester Ontario College Graduate Certificate where students learn how to design and create software by embedding AI into applications that meet industry needs.
