Being well-prepared for a range of recreation careers means hands-on training is essential. Besides these managerial skills, you'll need to be able to work at the grassroots level to bring appropriate recreational and leisure programming to the community. Training in community development, leisure and lifestyle enhancement, and inclusive recreation are important aspects of your program. To top off your studies in the "how" and "why" of recreation and leisure services, and tailor your learning to your career interest, you'll put it all into practice with a semester-long placement at the end of your program.

Work Experience
Your four-month placement offers you an intensive, challenging opportunity to put your skills into practice. You choose the location and setting, your instructors will encourage you as you find and negotiate your placement. You can do your placement locally, provincially, across Canada or in an international setting.

You'll work with community-based agencies (of your choice) on real -- not simulated -- recreation/leisure projects. This will be valuable learning for later, when you're looking for a job. Your placement could be working with youth at risk, with seniors, in outdoor education programs, fitness organizations/centres, children's programs, schools, resorts or municipal settings. There are few limitations as to where you can do your placement. For example, Fleming has a unique partnership with the Resort, Recreation and Tourism Management Student Internship Program in the United States that students can take advantage of. You can work as an activity coordinator at a resort or prepare for a career on a cruise ship.

For your placement, field agencies may require you to submit a current police records check, which is available from your local police department upon payment of a fee. In addition, you may also be required to provide a current Standard First Aid Certificate, and a current Basic CPR Certificate (level C).

The Fitness and Health Promotion program will prepare you to perform the roles and responsibilities of a fitness and health consultant. Heightened consumer awareness of fitness and health has resulted in a significant demand for these qualified fitness professionals.

The four areas of study support student success with industry-related certifications external to the program. Program faculty will provide guidance and information on the various certifications that are available and relevant to fitness and health professionals .

Over four semesters, you will progressively develop skills and knowledge in fitness assessment and exercise programming, nutrition, health promotion, leadership and self-development, business planning and lifestyle consulting. Field Placement opportunities will provide you with workplace experience supervised by trained professionals and leaders in the fitness industry. Placements can be tailored to your specific career goals or future university plans. For example, students have requested placements in hospitals, corporate sites, fitness facilities, chiropractic or physiotherapy settings, and non-profit organizations such as Diabetes Canada and Osteoporosis Canada. This new program is the only one of its kind in Ontario. Our unique three-semester Emergency Management and Business Continuity program is ideally suited for working professionals and those who are interested in pursuing a new career in this dynamic and growing field. The program’s flexible delivery model, online and on-campus delivery, means you can continue to work while pursuing advanced training. You’ll attend in-class intensive weekend sessions three times each semester, while the balance of course work is completed online. Emergency Management and Business Continuity professionals are trained to prepare for loss of critical business functions. Museum Management and Curatorship is an intensive, fast-paced, immersion experience that provides applied training for careers in the museum, gallery or heritage sectors. Approximately 75% of classes are held at the Peterborough Museum & Archives.

WORK EXPERIENCE
By the nature of this program, a significant amount of time is spent working in teams in the field, and on practical projects.
The third and final semester of the Museum Management and Curatorship program is a challenging, full-time, four-month internship during the spring and summer. This unpaid, curriculum-based internship will give you hands-on work experience where you will put all your hard work and studies into motion. Students should be prepared to relocate for the internship, to pay full tuition, and be self-supporting. You will negotiate your own internship with faculty assistance. Some students have gone abroad for the internship, for example, to Australia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Students are responsible for negotiating and funding requirements for international internships including visas, travel and insurance. Examples of internship locations include:

Social Service Workers build and maintain relationships with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities; recognize and respond to individual, group, organizational and community injustices and inequalities; and provide direct services and/or a bridging to resources to improve the quality of peoples’ lives at the personal, cultural, and system levels. Social Service Workers provide these services in a range of residential and community settings while working with other professionals such as child and youth workers, addiction counsellors, teachers, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, and doctors.

The program is four semesters in length with classroom-based courses in the first three semesters and a block placement in the final semester. Applied learning activities are infused into our classroom-based courses such as:

• Practicing interviewing and group facilitation skills for the purposes of engagement, assessment, goal planning and social support with individuals, groups, organizations, and communities;
• Working in teams to plan on and off-campus events, fundraising campaigns, educational awareness days, and promotion of social change;
• Conducting research to challenge forms of oppression as well as to design/develop/improve social service programs; and
• Participating in self-care strategies for personal and professional well-being.

Building on the above knowledge and skills gained, a full-time placement in the fourth and final semester of the program provides a range of practice opportunities in a work setting (agency and location to be determined in consultation with the student, faculty, and available agency sites).

The program's flexible delivery structure features entry points in the fall, winter, and spring with all four intakes running every semester. This meets the needs of diverse student groups including:

• Students who require or wish a reduced course load
• Students who want to complete the program faster can attend four continuous semesters and graduate in sixteen months
• Winter intake, first semester students take second semester in the spring, third semester in the fall, and fourth semester in the winter. Spring first semester intake takes semester two in the fall, the third semester in the winter, and the fourth semester in the spring. Students starting in September complete the second semester in the Winter, the third semester in the Fall, and the forth semester in the Winter and take the summer semester off.
• Individuals receiving funding that is dependent on attending classes continuously without semester breaks would start in the Winter or Spring semesters.

WORK EXPERIENCE
The fourth and final semester integrates learning in the form of a full-time placement and takes place in a work setting matching your learning needs and choice of location with consultation between the student, faculty, and available agency sites. Please be aware that 30 hours of volunteer service within an agency is required between entry into the SSW program and prior to entry into the fourth semester for placement and students must have successfully completed all first, second, and third semester courses prior to entry into fourth semester.

Specific agencies may have requirements such as proof of a current Emergency First Aid certification, CPR certification (Level C), a university degree, or additional immunizations. Also, some agencies may have required in-service training that the student must take prior to placement.

Fleming College offers a unique five-semester Massage Therapy program. We provide students with an excellent academic foundation and strong applied skills. Students will develop the knowledge and ability to effectively conduct a client assessment, create ethical treatment plans, deliver safe and effective massage therapy treatments, and evaluate the outcome of treatments. Our professional hydraulic massage therapy tables, large laundry facilities and Clinic Preparation course provides each student with an exceptional practical learning experience. Every week students put their skills into practice at our SPA + Clinic at Fleming College, our new onsite clinic which is supervised by a Registered Massage Therapist.
