Museum Management and Curatorship is an intensive, fast-paced, immersion experience that provides applied training for careers in the museum, gallery or heritage sectors. Approximately 75% of classes are held at the Peterborough Museum & Archives.

WORK EXPERIENCE

The third and final semester of the Museum Management and Curatorship program is a challenging, full-time, four-month internship during the spring and summer. This unpaid, curriculum-based internship will give you hands-on work experience where you will put all your hard work and studies into motion. Students should be prepared to relocate for the internship, to pay full tuition, and be self-supporting. You will negotiate your own internship with faculty assistance. Some students have gone abroad for the internship, for example, to Australia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. New Work - Integrated Learning Experience:
We have re-designed the program's applied learning component that takes place in semesters five and six. Put your education to the test in a new, innovative work-integrated learning experiences including a capstone course where you will complete an entire accounting cycle for a small, private corporation, and a 14-week work placement with a private, public sector, or not-for-profit organization.

Get additional direct experience while giving something back to local communities. Students will also have the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge and hone their interpersonal and communication skills through participation in the Canada Revenue Volunteer Income Tax Preparation Program. Students will utilize tax software to prepare and e-file tax returns for eligible Kawartha Lake residents.

The Mental Health and Addiction program has been redesigned to ensure graduates are skilled in both mental health and addictions according to the latest industry standards. 

GRADUATES OF THE MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION PROGRAM WILL:

• Gain the skills to work in a variety of settings supporting clients, families, groups and communities affected by substance use and mental health issues.
• Acquire the ability to critically analyze multiple and intersecting causes and impacts of substance use and mental health issues. This multidimensional approach integrates Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP), and Indigenous approaches to working in the field of mental health and addiction.
• Understand how to apply evidence - based knowledge and skills in screening, assessment, treatment planning and interventions that promote equitable access to supports and services.
• Learn the application of harm reduction strategies, trauma informed interventions, case management, health promotion, and prevention.
• Have the opportunity to gain direct field practice working within an interdisciplinary team providing support throughout the substance use and mental health system.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
During the first semester of your educational journey, you will be introduced to the field with courses in Human Service, Power Privilege and Oppression, Counselling Interventions I, and Mental Health and Recovery. You will also learn about Indigenous Studies.
In your second semester you will build on the knowledge gained in first semester to learn much more about substance use and mental health. Courses focus on the Understanding Substance Use, Screening and Assessment, Case Management and Service Coordination, Prevention and Health Promotion, Counselling Interventions II and Ethics and Professional Practice.
Third semester helps you explore Trauma Specific Treatment Interventions, Family and Social Support, Understanding Concurrent Disorders, Building Capacity in Communities, Counselling Interventions III and Professional Practice.
The fourth and final semester integrates what you have learned in the classroom over the previous three semesters during a professional field placement experience. Field placement learning can take place anywhere in the province, or across Canada. Students will also complete and online Psychopharmacology course while on field placement.

Fleming's Mental Health and Addiction program offers a unique applied learning experience which enables graduates to work in various areas within the field of mental health and addictions. Students can choose to build on their program of study in Mental Health and Addictions by completing the Social Service Worker dual diploma, or pursue a degree with advanced standing at a university through one of our many transfer agreements.

The program's flexible delivery structure features entry points in the fall, winter, and spring with all four intakes running every semester. This meets the needs of diverse student groups including:

• Students who require or wish a reduced course load
• Students who want to complete the program faster can attend four continuous semesters and graduate in sixteen months.
• Winter intake, first semester students take second semester in the spring, third semester in the fall, and fourth semester in the winter. Spring first semester intake takes semester two in the fall, the third semester in the winter, and the fourth semester in the spring. Students starting in September complete the second semester in the Winter, the third semester in the Fall, and the forth semester in the Winter and take the summer semester off.
• Individuals receiving funding that is dependent on attending classes continuously without semester breaks would start in the Winter or Spring semesters.

WORK EXPERIENCE
In your final semester, you will work on an intensive team project or field placement. Each student will contribute specialized knowledge, learned in their program of study, to the solution of a real world technological problem posed by a sponsoring business or organization. Recent projects include:

• Field placements in Security Operations Centres (SOCs) as security analysts, conducting analysis and protection against cyber threats in real time
• Field placements within financial and forensic firms, working real cases
• Field placements within corporate security departments and information security service providers
• Field Placements within cyber security units of various government agencies
• Security and penetration testing engagements with industry organizations
• Forensic analysis and creation of standards for a security corporation
• Development and field deployment of a computer network Intrusion Detection System for a managed security service company to support large commercial clients

This applied project or field placement will enhance problem-solving skills, applied industry knowledge, and the ability to work as part of a team. You'll also learn critical workplace skills such as time management, how to map a critical path, and presentation skills. Since you may be working on sophisticated developmental or research-based work, sponsors will often use the project as a testing ground and recruitment opportunity.

Our program has a fall and winter start date. Each intake runs for three consecutive semesters, which means you can complete the full program in just one year. During the spring and fall, students complete extensive hands-on training designed around real-world firefighting experiences and scenarios. Additional classroom theory, college course material and medical upgrading to the EMR Standard, occurs during the winter months. Students graduate fully- prepared to enter the fire service industry.

Fleming’s program provides you with over 60 days of hands-on practical training, which is delivered at the Eastern Ontario Emergency Training Academy (EOETA). The Academy is a well–established, fully equipped fire and emergency services training facility.

Course content is based on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and includes the following topics: fire behavior, suppression, ventilation, incident management systems, command and control, hazardous materials, forcible entry, firefighter survival, auto extrication, confined space awareness, technical rescue, fire attack scenarios, fitness and wellness, fire prevention principles, public education and medical training that includes the Red Cross Emergency Medical Response (EMR) and International Trauma Life Support (ITLS). To further assist students, we offer fire industry-specific interviewing techniques and career planning strategies to prepare them for the application and interview process within the fire services.

The Eastern Ontario Emergency Training Academy (EOETA), our primary training facility, is located 40km east of Peterborough in the village of Norwood. EOETA has several established training environments including a burn tower, roof props, door props, search and rescue maze, confined space prop and a new high intensity propane training props. Students are fully-trained in all aspects of firefighting in a real-world environment, live-fire environment, allowing for a proper evaluation of each student, while completing the NFPA hands-on skills practice and evaluations.
