The Deafblind & Intervenor Studies program is a one-year certificate that will prepare you to work with individuals who have a combined vision and hearing loss. Significant components of this program are delivered online. This program is open to both Deaf and non-Deaf students.

Preparing students to be the eyes and ears for people who are Deafblind
Do you have a passion for helping others? Want to work in a dynamic and evolving sector? Are you creative and a good communicator? If you want to make a difference, consider becoming an intervenor and work with people who are Deafblind.

This one-year Ontario college certificate will prepare you to work with individuals who have a combined vision and hearing loss. You will learn various communication methods to support individuals with deafblindness in accessing information and interacting more fully with their environment.

Most courses are delivered online with some in-person content (semester 1 is delivered fully online; the first seven week of semester 2 are taught in-person and the second seven weeks are taught online).

What you will learn

  • How to work with Deafblind children and adults – many of whom are often medically fragile.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) – a visual language that is adapted to accommodate for the vision loss of those with this dual sensory loss.
  • Professionalism, values and ethics, health and aging.
  • How to interact with members of the Deafblind community both virtually and in-person. For those attending from outside of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), interactive sessions will be arranged in your community.

The Theatre Arts – Performance program at George Brown's School of Media and Performing Arts offers you vigorously concentrated, career-oriented training in the fundamental skills, practicalities, traditions and professionalism needed to work as a professional actor in theatre, television and film.

The conservatory, hands-on training is an integrated curriculum in which almost all subjects are related directly to the acting profession. Five skill courses form the core of our classical approach to training the actor: voice, speech, movement, music and dance. The acting curriculum features improvisation, contact improvisation, storytelling, poetry, text analysis, contemporary and classical scene studies, neutral mask, character mask, clowning, commedia dell’arte, television and film technique, and audition preparation. Further classes include: stage combat, dialectology, theatre history, the business of acting, and the Alexander Technique.

Besides great partnerships with Soulpepper Theatre Company, Tarragon Theatre and Theatre by the Bay, George Brown has run a successful mentorship program for a number of years. In the final year, students will be paired with a successful theatre practitioner. This partnership starts in the students’ final semester and continues for roughly a yearlong period. Mentors will meet with the student at a minimum three times as the student graduates and begins to transition out into the field. This program has been not only a success for the students but mentors have also expressed how great the experience has been and how rewarding it is to be there for the students as they graduate.

This program empowers designers with the latest real-time interactive tools and technologies. Your Field Education Options - There are 80 to 100 hours of experiential learning opportunities offered in the program within the esports industry. This includes partner facilitated and hosted projects, and mentoring.?

Program Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Construct proposals, promotional material, and presentations to meet the needs of stakeholders by utilizing evidence-based research, persuasive communication techniques, and graphical elements.
  • Manage technical strategy, including applications, software and hardware required in scalable esports environments.
  • Develop strategies for the successful implementation of esports partner and sponsorship programs.
  • Assess, plan and implement differentiated delivery modes for esports events to ensure profitability and viability.
  • Research the micro and macro environments of gamers and esports communities in order to develop events, experiences, marketing and promotional material that respond to the needs of those environments and communities.
  • Adhere to professional, legal, regulatory, environmental, ethical, diversity and inclusion standards when performing work and conducting esports business operations.
  • Manage accounting and financial operations to comply with tax and insurance practices for entrepreneurial, small, medium and large businesses.
  • Manage internal staff and external relationships by applying human resource leadership principles and negotiation skills to promote organizational effectiveness. 
  • Use project management principles, tools, and strategies to plan, organize and execute online or in-person experiences.
  • Lead the development of integrated marketing strategies that increase brand equity and revenue streams across all media.
  • Build and cultivate inclusive community-oriented business strategies that engage diverse stakeholders and generate revenue across the esports ecosystem

Students in the advanced diploma Business Administration – Supply Chain and Operations Management program will be prepared to perform marketing forecasting, demand management, production planning and other functions, in careers that include logistics, transportation, warehousing, exporting, planning and forecasting. The supply chain and operations management courses in this program will allow graduates to demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities related to both business in general, and supply chain jobs in particular.
